I had the great privilege and joy to teach Alex this semester. He meant so much to me and quickly became a favorite student. He was a joy to have in class, always offering valuable perspectives on the stories we read. I also cherished our chats after class-he´d noticed a game we both liked in my Google Drive, and it became a shared topic that I believe we both looked forward to. His kindness, humor, and light-hearted grumbling about me turning on all the lights in the classroom are moments I´ll never forget.
I only just found out about his passing a few days ago, and when I arrived in our classroom, all the lights were on-a first-and there was a heart on the chalkboard with the words "Love yourself." (I added the + others.) I found it meaningful and a reminder of how much his presence enriched our lives. I truly feel I´m a better teacher for having had the honor of teaching him.

I had Spanish class with Alex and he was nothing but a joy to be around. Hearing his dedication to helping the children he loved dearly was truly inspiring. He´s very loved and will be missed by the UMKC community <3

Alex, you are the reason I survived high school and you got me through so much back then up until now. I will miss you for the rest of my life. Thank you for accepting me with open arms no matter what and for never having a reason to leave. Your absence is deeply felt and I´ll cherish the memories I have of you forever. Rest easy, best friend. I love you and I´ll see you there someday.

Last night, I learned something that shattered me. I had been texting my roommate, Alex, for about a week, but he hadn´t replied, which was very weird for him; he always responded immediately. So, I did what I usually do in these situations: I Googled his name. That´s when I saw it, his obituary. I was completely devastated. I couldn´t believe it. My friend Alex was gone!
When I was struggling to find a place in Kansas City, Alex was the only one who offered me a room for $700/month even when my half of the rent would have been $800. He didn´t hesitate. He was just that type of person: kind, generous, and always looking out for others.
Alex wasn´t just a roommate; he became a true friend. He would take me to Walmart for groceries, helping me with the little things that made life easier. Without him, my time in Kansas City would have been a lot harder. When I told him I was leaving, I cried and told him, "Sorry, man. I failed you. I know how much it mattered to you to have a roommate who could help with the bills." During my time in Kansas City, he became like a brother to me. I trusted him completely, so much so that I would hand him my credit cards, knowing he was an honest man.
This past month, he was the only one who drove me to the airport and stayed with me until I went through security. He didn´t leave until he knew I was out of sight. I always promised him that if I ever came back to Missouri, it would be to visit him.
Alex was one of those rare friends you find only once in a lifetime. His passing has left a hole in my heart that words can´t fill. I will miss him deeply.
