Alexandra A. Downs, or as she was affectionately known to all, Nana, left the stage of life for her final curtain call on March 11, 2026, in
Royse City, Texas. Born on January 19, 1943, in the quaint town of Bellshill, Scotland, Nana's zest for life began as the daughter of Nellie May and William Patterson Downs and blossomed alongside her sisters, Mary (who preceded her in the great beyond) and Catherine.
Nana's life was an extraordinary performance, filled with the melody of laughter and the rhythm of love. She toured Europe with the USO as a singer, bringing joy and entertainment to many. Her voice wasn't just a talent; it was her way of connecting with the world. Eventually, she found her way to the United States, where she embraced her roles as an entertainer, mother, and grandmother with the same passion and gusto. Her family was her encore, her greatest act. Lesley, Darrell, Katy Jane (who she is with again) and Janell, her beloved children, along with her son-in-law Jarod, were her pride and joy. Nana's heart was a treasure chest, and her grandchildren- L.W. (who now shares tales with her in eternity), Billy Joe, Alexandra, Wade, Dylan, Brady, Ryan May, Grayson and Casey - were the precious gems within it. The sparkle extended to her great-great-grandchildren-Taylor, Jesse, Kenoa, Melody, and Bear-who were the light of her life.
Nana was a Christian who lived her faith through her generous spirit and her dedication to her family and friends. She never met a stranger, and everyone knew her as Nana. She was the embodiment of joy and insisted that life should be celebrated. "Give me flowers while I'm here, not when I'm gone," she would say, with a twinkle in her eye. Her interests were as eclectic as her wardrobe.
Nana was a singer at heart, a mother and grandmother by calling, and a fashionista by choice. She loved shopping, not just for the find but for the fun of it. Entertaining was second nature to her-whether she was hosting a family dinner or taking the stage, she knew how to light up a room. Road trips were her way of seeking adventure, and she was an animal lover with a soft spot for every creature she met. A visit to the casino was never just about the slots; it was about the stories and the people. The beach was her sanctuary, a place where she could bask in the sunshine she adored. Typhoo tea and chocolate were her simple pleasures, enjoyed often and with gusto. Her grandchildren were her audience, her fans, and her legacy, and she cherished every moment with them.
Funny, thoughtful, and generous-these words paint a picture of Nana, but they only capture a glimpse of her spirit. She was a comedian not just in tone, but in life, always finding the humor in every situation and teaching us to laugh along the way.
As we bid farewell to Alexandra A. Downs, let's honor her wish and celebrate her extraordinary life. Let's remember the songs she sang, the joy she spread, and the love she shared. Nana's show may be over, but her encore will echo in our hearts forever.
Nana has always said she would not want you all to celebrate her in sadness but in happiness. Please choose happy colors when selecting your outfit for her memorial. She would like that!
