Alfred Turner

Alfred "Toby" Turner, 92, of New Haven, Connecticut passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.
Toby was born in Jacksonville, Florida on August 10, 1930, and grew up on the campus of Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. He served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1951. Toby worked as a chef for many establishments, including Yale University.
Toby was a dedicated member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. While at St. Andrews, he served as sexton, junior warden, usher, counter, and president of the men's club. He was a member of the vestry and the choir; he organized the church's breakfasts, dinners, and Friday fish fries.
Toby enjoyed many activities. He liked to fish and play spades, loved to watch sports such as basketball, tennis, golf, and was often seen riding his 10-speed bike around town, even after he reached "senior" status. He especially enjoyed singing, which he did frequently at his last residence, the Mary Wade Home. His pleasing voice and strong, hearty laugh stayed with him to the end.
Toby is survived by one daughter, Tracy Tucker of Maryland; a dedicated daughter-in-law, Georgia (Charles) Simon of New Haven; special friend, Francene Brown of South Carolina; loving cousin, Princess (Lenny) Bullock Davis of Florida; 18 step-grandchildren; and a host of step-great and great-great grandchildren. Toby was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Simon Turner; five stepchildren: Hermaline Mitchell-Crowell, Patrick Simon, Myron Simon, Jr., Bernadette Simon-Keen and Charles Edward Simon; mother, Viola Muse Anderson; father, Robert Clay Turner; and sister, Juanita McCray.
