Alfred (Al) C. West Jr November 15, 1966 – January 27, 2025

Longtime resident of Lewiston, Cheboygan, Alpena, MI and Denver, CO

Al West passed away peacefully on Monday, January 27, 2025, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan.

Born in Grayling, Michigan, Al was the eldest child of Alfred and Carol (Waisanen) West. He grew up and went to school in Lewiston where he was known as Alfie, kind and friendly to all.

Al graduated from Johannesburg-Lewiston High School (JLHS) in 1984, where he was Senior Class President, a saxophone player in the band, a member of the Honor Society, and a standout athlete. He earned varsity letters in both football and baseball and was part of the JLHS 1983 state championship runner-up baseball team. After high school, he earned a Bachelor of Science, Resource Development, and Environmental Engineering from Michigan State University.

His career was varied, working with tribes and rural communities to implement modern water systems throughout the southwest United States, providing federal grant assistance, designing home and building projects, working with local non-profits to provide housing for low to moderate income residents in Northeast Michigan, and later becoming a respected realtor.

Al’s many passions included music, playing both the saxophone and guitar, golf, fishing, hunting, downhill skiing, camping, boating, bowling, and traveling. His greatest joy was being a father to AJ and Tori.

He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Renita (Dixon) West of Cheboygan; his children, Victoria (Tori) and Alfred (AJ), and his sister, Elizabeth West, of Lewiston; and his in-laws, the Dixon family.

A memorial service will be held in July to honor his life and legacy.
