Obituary
Alice Louise Lass
June 20, 1932 – May 9, 2025
Alice Louise Lass, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and community leader, passed away peacefully at Washakie Medical Center in
Worland, Wyoming, on May 9, 2025, surrounded by her children. She was 92.
Born on June 20, 1932, in Worland to Ralph and Sylvia (Garbutt) Reed, Alice's roots ran deep in the Big Horn Basin. Raised on a farm with a strong work ethic and sense of faith, she took on the responsibility of cooking for her family at a young age, while her mother worked in the fields. She learned by trial and error on a coal stove, standing on a wooden box. She attended school in Manderson, Wyoming, and later graduated from Cody High School in 1950.
Alice was known for her outgoing spirit and popularity. She worked as a bank teller at the First National Bank in Cody and was baptized at the town's Methodist Church. Her deep and enduring faith became the cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of Zion Church, Alice lived her beliefs daily and instilled a strong foundation of faith in her children and grandchildren. She taught Sunday School, sang in the Chancel choir, and served in Women's Ministry.
Alice met her husband, Con Lass, at a dance in Ten Sleep. Though he was quiet, his persistence and gentle nature won her heart, and they married on November 7, 1954. They worked together on the farm and raised three children-Stan (Joy), Janet (John) Snyder, and Con Jr. (Holly)-with love, faith, and a deep commitment to family. Their 62-year marriage was a partnership grounded in love and resilience.
Alice lived a life of remarkable service and leadership. She was the first and only woman to serve as a Washakie County Commissioner, holding office for 14 years. She took pride in advocating for local needs, including securing a facility for Search and Rescue volunteers. She was also a founding member of Today's Homemakers, and was known for scooping ice cream at the county fair. She was a 4-H leader, and taught cooking and sewing.
In her 60s, Alice trained at the World Wide College of Auctioneering. She loved auctioneering for benefit auctions. Whether she was hauling meals to the beet field, driving beet truck, working as a clerk at the Worland Sales Barn, or working for her daughter and sister at their boutiques, Alice brought dedication, warmth, and joy to everything she did. She especially loved spending time with her cousins and her sister Peggy.
Alice's kitchen was well known for her pies, cabbage burgers, and especially her famous lemon cake, which was a staple at church functions. She was famous for her Halloween popcorn balls! She also became affectionately known as "Sweet Alice" thanks to her legendary sweet corn, a tradition proudly carried on by her grandchildren and great-granddaughters to this day. She loved going to the family cabin and putting on a feast for extended family. Holiday dinners were the best!
Alice was adventurous, she even parasailed solo in her 60's on one of the many trips to Mexico that she and Con took with their family. She enjoyed playing pinochle and golf with her daughter and friends. She told stories with unmatched charm and wit. She loved flowers, and her yard was the most beautiful around. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. As she once said, "My family was my biggest accomplishment."
Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Conrad; infant son, James Robert; sisters, Dolly, Linda Jean, Peggy Wessell and Nancy Ann, along with, numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She is survived by her children, Stanley (Joy) Lass of Worland, Janet (John) Snyder of Worland and Conrad Jr (Holly) Lass of Alexandria, Virginia; brother, Ralph Donald Reed; grandchildren: Michael (Sharon) Lass, Jason (Kaylan) Snyder, Casey (Kealey) Lass, Steven (Jamie) Snyder, Anna Katherine Lass and Conrad Lass III; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be held 11:00 AM, July 2, 2025 at Zion Church with Dr. Jason W. Snyder and Rev. James Byers officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Zion Church or Kurt McNab (Fort Shilo Ministries). Please mail checks to PO Box 524
