Alice McCorry, 93 of Kalamazoo, passed away peacefully at Friendship Village on September 20, 2024. She was born to Everett and Vivian (Anderson) Johnson in Iron Mountain on September 13, 1931.
Alice graduated from Sault St. Marie High School in 1949. She then went on to earn her degree as a Registered Nurse from St Luke’s School of Nursing in Marquette and spent many years as a dedicated nurse to countless patients.
She married James “Jim” McCorry on March 14, 1953, in Sault St. Marie. They were blessed with 41 years until his passing in 1994. Alice and Jim raised two boys, James Jr. “Jim” and David, and were so excited to become grandparents to Matt, Sarah, Andrew, Megan, Nate, and Marissa.
She loved her family and was grateful for the time they shared and memories they made. Her grandkids fondly remember growing up and seeing their grandmother enjoy swimming, gardening, knitting, sewing, playing piano, and spending time with her family. She hosted sleepovers at her house for her grandkids and they all enjoyed playing board games, reading, and learning how to knit. When her grandchildren grew up and started families of their own, she became a beloved great-grandmother to 14 great-grandchildren.
Alice spent many selfless years volunteering at her local church, the Discovery Shop, and local library. Giving back with her time and donating to important charities was always a priority for her.
Alice, like many great women, loved red wine and ice cream. She enjoyed travelling and spent many years taking trips around the world. She was the perfect combination of smart, sassy, incredibly kind, patient, funny, and loving; everything you’d want in a wife, mom, mother-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, aunt, and friend.
Alice is survived by her daughters-in-law Nancy and Pam McCorry; grandkids Matt McCorry, Sarah Weston, Andrew McCorry (Kristin Rossi), Megan (Scott) Jessee, Nate (Alicia) McCorry, and Marissa McCorry; 14 great-grandchildren; siblings Janet and Verne Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Everett and Vivian Johnson, husband Jim, sons Jim and David, sisters Lois and Marian Johnson, and brother Ron Johnson
A memorial service will be held for Alice at Calvary Community Church 7829 5th St. Mattawan, MI 49071 on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 11:00 am. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Jim at a private family ceremony in the future.
