Almeader Theresa Ann Smyre Howard, a beacon of light and lifelong educator, took her eternal rest on May 14, 2025, at the age of 65. Born on July 28, 1959, in Salisbury, North Carolina, she was the cherished daughter of Mrs. Joyce Smyre and the late Mr. Robert Smyre. Known for her radiant smile, vibrant spirit, and passion for learning, Almeader truly embodied the essence of grace and excellence.
A Legacy of Learning and Leadership -
Almeader was educated in the Rowan-Salisbury School System, graduating with pride as a member of the Salisbury High School Class of 1977. She continued her academic journey at Livingstone College, where she majored in Elementary Education, laying the foundation for a career devoted to empowering young minds. Her commitment to education led her to earn a Master's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Doctorate of Education from Northcentral University, reflecting her unwavering pursuit of knowledge.
Her professional journey included impactful roles within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) system, where she served as an Assistant Principal at Hidden Valley Elementary School, University Meadows Elementary School, and Winterfield Elementary School. During her time at CMS, Almeader forged lifelong friendships and left a lasting legacy, nurturing both students and colleagues with her compassionate leadership.
After retiring from CMS, Almeader continued her passion for teaching as an instructor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Johnson & Wales University, where she helped shape the next generation of educators. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she took on the role of Activities Coordinator for the Education Department of the United Churches of Jesus, providing guidance and inspiration to countless educators and church members.
Family and Fellowship
Family was at the heart of Almeader's life. She cherished every moment spent with loved ones, from family trips and church gatherings to joyful celebrations at the largest Livingstone College alumni cookouts at her mother's home. She had a special way of making everyone feel valued, always offering the perfect gifts and thoughtful words of encouragement. Her infectious laugh, stylish flair, and unmatched sense of hospitality were hallmarks of her presence, making every gathering a cherished memory.
Service and Sisterhood
Almeader's faith was the cornerstone of her life. A devoted member of Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, she was deeply involved in the church's educational ministries. She also found sisterhood and service through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Livingstone College National Alumni Association, reflecting her commitment to leadership and community uplift.
