Alvin Hansen, 97, of Baker, MN, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2025, in River Pointe Assisted Living, Moorhead, MN.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin, MN with Rev. Brett Hartwig officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery, Sabin, MN.
Visitation will be 5-7 PM, Monday, April 21, 2025, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday.
Alvin A. Hansen was born on September 28th, 1927, to Lillian (Jacobson) and Alfred Hansen and died on April 13, 2025. Alvin grew up in the Rothsay, MN area with 7 brothers and sisters. After graduating from 8th grade, he quit school so he could help on the family farm. As a very young adult he moved to the Baker area to be hired on various potato farms. It was there that he met the love of his life, Fern Butenhoff.
They were married October 21, 1950. Shortly after their marriage, Alvin was drafted into the army for 2 years. After he was honorably discharged from the army, he started farming with his brothers-in-law.
Alvin was one of the founders of the Min-Dak Sugar Beet Cooperative and worked on numerous sugar beet boards and research groups for many years and represented sugar beet growers in St. Paul and Washington. In 1974, Alvin and his son Roger started farming sugar beets together, later joined by Kurt Sogn.
Alvin was a very faithful and active, longtime member of Sabin Trinity Lutheran Church where he served in many capacities.
Alvin moved from Baker to River Pointe Memory Care in Moorhead in 2022.
Survivors include 2 children; Doug (Nancy) of Fergus Falls, Kathy Sogn of Moorhead; daughter-in-law Laurie Hansen, 11 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Alice Hansen, Loretta Faulkner, and 1 brother Lorin; the Butenhoff brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Clarene, Bev, Ron and Hazel, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife Fern, son Roger, son-in law Kurt Sogn, parents and 3 brothers Verlin, Harold, Larry, and 1 sister Judy Peterson.
