Amann Moore Sowell, 49, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, March 10 at Baptist Health Richmond, following a brief hospitalization for cancer. He was much loved by his family and many friends, and he will be greatly missed.
Amann was born in Athens, Ga. on Nov. 3, 1974. He lived most of his life in Berea, but spent his early years in Paint Lick, a place he considered a perfect childhood setting. He moved to Richmond only a year ago when he bought a house there. Amann attended Paint Lick Elementary School, St. Mark Catholic School in Richmond and Berea Community Schools, graduating from BCHS in 1993. He earned a bachelor's degree in technology from Eastern Kentucky University, and later completed coursework there toward a masters degree.
For the past few years, Amann had been part of the Bechtel Parsons team at Bluegrass Army Depot that destroyed the last remaining chemical weapons stockpile in the United States. He was proud of his involvement in this historic achievement and was currently employed by the Parsons Corp. in closure of the plant.
Amann had a wide variety of interests, talents, and creative pursuits. He had studied commercial music recording, loved listening to many kinds of music, going to concerts, writing songs and was a fine musician. He played guitar and was a vocalist with the blues/jazz/classic rock group Blues Invention for the past several years, performing at various venues and events in Berea and Richmond. As an increasingly serious photographer, Amann was drawn to subjects and scenes in the local landscape, creating beautiful, dreamy or moody images, some of which had been included in local photography exhibitions. A natural athlete, he had played sports all his life and been a basketball standout at BCHS. He enjoyed fishing, hiking and other outdoor activities. When his parents moved to coastal Georgia, he loved getting out on the water, sailing, fishing or just taking in the beautiful marsh and ocean views there. He was smart, witty, funny and fun to be around. He liked cats.
Amann will be remembered by those who knew him as a soft-spoken, kind, caring and generous person and as someone who gave far more than he took. He looked for ways to make people's lives better and almost always did.
Surviving Amann are his parents Cliff and Julie Sowell of Darien, Ga.; brothers Andrew Sowell also of Darien, and Patrick (Caitlin) Sowell of Blue Ash, Ohio; nieces Stella and Emma Sowell and nephew Billy Sowell, also of Blue Ash; and beloved aunts, cousins and their families in Lexington and Savannah, Ga. Amann was preceded in death by paternal grandmother Ida Carolyn Sowell, maternal grandparents Margaret and William F. Moore Sr., and uncle William F. Moore Jr. A Memorial Service for Amann will take place Saturday, April 13, 2 p.m., at St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 1285 Barnes Mill Rd. in Richmond. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. A memorial gift may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Dear Julie and family, I just now learned of the loss of your son, Amann. I feel your pain as I lost my youngest sister, Tina, to a brief hospitalization due to Cancer as well. Reading his legacy was heartfelt as he was an impressive young man as well as a blessing to your family. My deepest sympathies, Barbara Gehrett-Moore.

Amann sure was a gifted athlete. He could play any sport he made up his mind to play. Reserved, he was rather stoic and serious as I recall. I always enjoyed watching him play basketball. I have fond memories of seeing him when he was a child or young adult from time to time at Seabury Center or at Hutchin's Library at B.C. and walking to and from his house with one of his brothers.
Fondly,

I only met Amann few short years ago. In that time I found Amann to be quiet yet had cool sense of humor! Amann had a view of spirituality that was very helpful to myself and many others. My only regrets are that I didn´t get to meet him sooner. He will be missed!
