Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home on Oct. 14, 2025.
Andrea Massimi, a loving husband and father, passed away on October 10, 2025, his wife and sons by his side.
Born to Carlo and Silvana Massimi in Rome, Italy, on January 30, 1953, Andrea grew up immersed in the culture, history, and Catholic faith of the Eternal City. He enjoyed a happy childhood in the neighborhood of Balduina near St. Peter's Basilica. Throughout his life, Andrea traveled widely and lived in many places, but he always considered Rome to be the most beautiful city on Earth.
After high school, Andrea attended the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Carrara and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. A talented artist, Andrea was a prolific painter with styles both abstract and representational. His work hangs on walls in Europe and America. He was creating a new series of expressionist paintings in the summer and into the autumn of 2025.
Andrea was committed to helping others. He became a certified rehabilitation counselor through the Progetto Uomo Program in Rome and received specialized certification in therapeutic counseling from the Istituto Dell'Approccio Centrato Sulla Persona, Fondato da Carl Rogers, Department of Psichiatria dell'Università di Messina. Andrea worked for many years at Centro Italiano di Solidarieta Don Mario Picchi in Rome as an educator and rehabilitation counselor, guiding many young men and women on their paths to recovery from addiction. Countless people benefitted from Andrea's kindness over the years. Even when dealing with his own burdens, he always thought of others: baking bread for sick friends, cooking gourmet Italian meals for family, and encouraging everybody with humor and good cheer.
Described by his friends as a cultural omnivore, Andrea knew every movie, every director, every soundtrack, every artist, every painting, and every band and musician–from the celebrated to the obscure. He witnessed the evolution of rock through the decades and saw nearly every great rock-and-roll act in concert, many as burgeoning artists. But perhaps it was natural beauty that moved him most-animals, flowers, trees, the ocean, the stars, the sun. Like one of his favorite saints, Francis of Assisi, Andrea viewed nature with reverence. This extended to the pets he loved, especially Marley.
Andrea met and married the love of his life, Margaret Ryan of
Stamford, Connecticut, in Rome, and the couple had two sons. In 2006, the family moved to the United States, and Andrea came to love America as his second home country. He lived on both coasts and traveled to many states. His American relatives adored him. A devoted husband and father, Andrea cherished and took pride in his family above all. He passed onto his sons a love of art and music, a desire to take care of the world and people God created, and a passion for the greatest soccer team of all time, AS Roma.
Andrea is survived by his wife of 36 years Margaret Ryan Massimi, his sons Dennis and Nicolas, his sister Cristiana, his nephew Dino, his brother Marco, his cousin Alessandro, his mother-in-law Margaret H. Ryan, many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a great-niece.
The family will forever hold a place in their hearts for Dr. Jonathan Fenkel of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Dr. Raphael Rosen, Floyd Sogo-An, and especially John Schwartz.
A wake will be held on Thursday October 16 from 4PM – 7PM at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday October 17 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, Stamford CT.
