Andrew Blackwell age 82 passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Born on July 1, 1943 in the same city he called home throughout his life.
Andy's journey was one marked by dedication to family, and service to his country with a deep connection to his community. A proud graduate of Fifth Avenue High School class of 1961. Andy went on to serve in the United States Navy, during his time in the military he distinguished himself not only through his service, but also as a celebrated athlete. While he enjoyed all sports it was baseball where he truly excelled,earning admiration from teammates and competitors alike.
After returning from the Military, Andy worked for the City of Pittsburgh as a refuge collector or many years before retiring in 1995.
Andy was a beloved figure in Pittsburgh's Hill district community. His presence was a constant source of familiarity and generosity for neighbors and Friends alike. Known and loved throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio, Andy's gentle spirit and great sense of humor left lasting impressions wherever he went. Andy was slow to anger but never shied away from addressing difficult situations with strength and integrity.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents Nelson and Annie Clara Blackwell; his son Andy Blackwell Jr.; (AKA) little Andy; 4; Brothers Johnny, Kenneth, Levie, and Nathaniel Blackwell. 3; sisters Gloria Johnson, Melvie Blackwell, and Laydell Cabbagestalk.
Andy's legacy lives on through a large loving family.
Throughout his lifetime Andy embraced fatherhood with open arms. Not only his own children, but also as a stepfather, a father figure, or a mentor to many others who were fortunate enough to know him. His love for family extended beyond bloodlines it was rooted in compassion and commitment.
He Leaves behind his wife Donna Blackwell of 34 years, his remaining siblings Drusilla Homes, and Gladys Baxter. Children - Andre, Lamar, Drew, Kimberly, Anthony, Boobie, Brandon,and stepson Marlynn to name a few. His daughter-in-law Ayonnie, granddaughter Amonie, and many more grandchildren /great-grandchildren. As well as a wide circle of nieces, nephews, extended family members and dear friends.
Andy will be truly missed by all who knew him. His memory will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched with love that endures beyond words. May his legacy bring comfort to those who mourn him and joy to those who remember him..
