Ann Mack Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cremation Society of the Carolinas & Capital Funeral Home - Raleigh on Sep. 6, 2023.
Chapel Hill
Elizabeth Ann Hunter Mack (Ann) died September 5 in Chapel Hill at the age of 97. She was surrounded by her three daughters, Meredith (Chicago), Meg (Amherst, MA) and Julia and her partner Debbie (Hillsborough). She was sassy, sharp and funny to the end. In addition to her family, Ann loved books, art (especially pottery), music, and conversation. In her last years living in the Carol Woods Health Center, she developed a love of shopping online via her Mac computer, leaving behind more than a dozen Allbirds shoes.
The youngest of three sisters, Ann was born in Cullowhee, NC and grew up on the campus of Western Carolina Teachers College (now Western Carolina University). She graduated from WCTC in 1945, taught high school in Durham and Asheville for several years, then worked at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she met and married Ray Mack in 1953.
They moved to Evanston, Illinois and spent almost 50 years as a team while Ray spent his academic career teaching sociology, eventually serving as Provost of Northwestern University. While raising three children, Ann volunteered at the Women's Board (Chicago), the Urban League, and Evanston Family Services. Before retiring, Ann volunteered enough years in the recovery room at the Evanston Hospital that she was described as "the red head" even after her hair had turned white.
In 2001, Ann and Ray retired to Carol Woods in Chapel Hill. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2003. Ray died in 2011. Since 2019, Ann resided in the Health Center where she received wonderful caring attention from numerous devoted and skilled health professionals, as well as her Helping Hand companion, CarolAnne.
Ann is survived by her three daughters Meredith, Meg (Allen Hart) and Julia (Debbie Hill), her sister in-law Betty Mack (Carol Taylor) of Black Mountain, her cousin Tye (Wanda) Hunter, two grandchildren, Benji Hart and Maya Hart (Aaron Bryant), and a great grandson, June Omari Bryant Hart. A descendant of the founder of Weaverville, NC, Ann has too many second and third cousins to recount here. Ann was also very proud of her granddog, Ali.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 on Saturday, October 21 in the Carol Woods Social Lounge, 750 Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill, NC.
To make a gift in Ann's memory, she asked that you consider a gift to either the (Carol Woods) Employee Appreciation Fund (nontax deductible) or to the H.T and Glen Weaver Memorial Scholarship fund at Western Carolina University.
