Anthony "Tony" Roy Campbell peacefully passed away April 24, 2025, at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. He was 77. Tony, the oldest son of five siblings, was born on August 21, 1947, to the late Joyce DaSilva and Roy Hugh Campbell in Falmouth, Jamaica West Indies.
Tony was a happy child. At the age of 5, he moved to Montego Bay where he attended Montego Bay Boys School. He later was awarded a scholarship to attend high school at Cornwall College. People were easily drawn to Tony due to his laughter and friendly demeanor. Tony was very popular on and off campus and played various sports.
His first major job after high school was with a construction company that built the first Holiday Day Inn Hotel in Montego Bay. Tony was well thought of by senior members of the construction team. His influence led to one-third of employee hires. During new hire interviews, the perspective employee would simply say - "Mr. Campbell sent me." While in Falmouth, Tony was active in local and national politics. Although he never ran for office, he would always say, "Someone has to help the little guys."
Tony migrated to the United States in 1974 and later became a naturalized US citizen. He enrolled in the University of the District of Columbia and graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in political science and philosophy. He later attended American University graduate school. While attending graduate school and working at night, Tony met the love of his life, his lovely wife Sandy, little knowing that they would experience forty-six years of love and devotion to each other.
Tony had a long career at the local telephone company as a service representative and a special service repair technician. He was later bitten by the entrepreneur bug and opened a local grocery store, Caribbean Marketplace. Prior to retirement, Tony taught in the Prince George's County school system as well as worked at Dulles airport for Swissport Cargo Services. Tony was an adventurer, seeker of knowledge, and an avid reader. He always carried a newspaper in hand to read during any spare moments.
Tony loved and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, including having and attending weekend parties, going to the annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA, watching the Washington football and basketball teams as well as the Manchester City soccer team, camping, playing poker and dominos, and making his famous rum punch. Every year he looked forward to planting his vegetable garden, and harvesting fresh callaloo, tomatoes, okra, green beans, and bell and scotch bonnet peppers. Tony also loved to travel, especially to Jamaica. He was a member of Reid Temple A.M.E. Church for over 20 years, serving in the Golden Reids, Community Fair, and King David Chess ministries. His greatest love of all was for his wife and girls. His wife Sandy was his "honey bunny", and his girls were his crown jewels.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Sandra "Sandy" Campbell; his daughters, Wandy "Lecia" Campbell, Nicole Campbell and Audrey Campbell; his grandsons, Brandon Connor and Isaiah Young; his granddaughter, Breah Campbell; his siblings, Lois (Easton) Manderson, Dorrett Daley, Paul (Karline) Campbell, Angella Campbell, Fitzgerald (Debbie) Brown; his stepmother, Carmen Campbell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing that Tony is in heaven cooking callaloo, dancing to the Caribbean beat, playing poker and dominos, maintaining the heavenly garden, and keeping abreast of current affairs.
