It would be difficult to overstate Dr Malcoun's importance in the field of Nephrology and Hypertension and in the lives of patients who were fortunate enough to have him as their physician and the students who revered and loved him.
He died at the age of 84 on May 22nd of respiratory complications related to Post Polio Syndrome.
Dr. Malcoun, a native Detroiter, graduated from the University of Detroit in 1960. He earned his medical degree from Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Chicago. After internship and internal medicine residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital, he became a fellow in Nephrology at Wayne County General Hospital. In 1969 he joined Detroit Clinical Specialists as head of the section of nephrology. Subsequently he was instrumental in founding Hypertension Nephrology Associates becoming president of the group. He remained in this practice until retiring in 2014.
He was Clinical Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and taught transiently at West Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine.He retained his position as Program Director of Nephrology at St. John Macomb Hospital until his retirement.
His leadership positions included membership on the Executive Committee of the Scientific Advisory Board of the
National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. There he was also an integral member of the Drug Bank, Hypertension, Public and Professional Education and Research and Fellowship Committees. In 1999, he was given the Champion of Hope Award by the
National Kidney Foundation of Michigan. He was a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and its President 1987-1988. He was made a Master Fellow of the ACOI, an honor bestowed on less than 2% of board certified members and awarded Internist of the Year in 2014.
Dr. Malcoun was the Medical Director of many outpatient Hemodialysis Units, In addition one of the first few outpatient hemodialysis units in the Detroit area was created at DOH with his participation. His attending and consulting Nephrology positions were at St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Beaumont-Botsford, Henry Ford Macomb-Warren and Garden City Hospitals.
His primary priority above all was patient care. He will be remembered by his colleagues, patients and their families as a warm, kind, compassionate and knowledgeable physician who willingly gave his time and expertise to all. His consummate teaching skills have contributed to untold number of younger Internists and Nephrologists, who owe him their intellectual heritage.
Dr. Malcoun lived in Detroit and Troy before finally settling in Grosse Pointe Shores. He wintered in Bonita Springs, Florida.
His friends remember Tony's interests in gardening (competing in growing the largest tomatoes and cucumbers), reading, fishing and as an avid basketball fan. He excelled at "shooting hoops". Above all he loved being with his wife, children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph & Eva (Habib) Malcoun, sister, Teresa Malcoun, grandson, Eddie Malcoun, and his nephew, John Jurewicz.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Elaine (Latoff) Malcoun, his children, Anthony Malcoun (Carie), Joan Eve Swain (Harry), Emily Malcoun (Kevin), and Joseph Malcoun (Caitlin), his grandchildren, Lucy, Harry, Marlena, Vivian, Harry IV, Joseph, Mayer, Eva, Lawerence, and Evan, his siblings, Yvonne Jurewicz (Marion), Angelle Kerwin (Michael), Raymond Malcoun (Penny), and Michele Malcoun (Leslie), and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, June 1 from 4-8pm with a scripture service, 7pm, at Chas. Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. Funeral Thursday, June 2, Instate 11:30am until time of Mass 12 Noon, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford, Grosse Pointe Woods.
