Anthony Militello, 70 of Gloucester, passed away on Monday, February 10th, at his home, surrounded by his loving children. Anthony faced a courageous battle with mesothelioma, demonstrating remarkable strength and resilience throughout his illness.
Born in Trappeto, Sicily, he was the son to the late Matteo and Caterina (Manzella) Militello. His family immigrated to America where he became a prestigious member of "the fort gang". He joined the US Navy straight out of high school. When he returned home he entered Gloucester's fishing community, soon becoming one of Gloucester's youngest boat captains. After many years at sea, he transitioned to a career in refrigeration and later became the property manager of the State Fish Pier.
Anthony was always active. He enjoyed biking, hiking with his grandchildren, gardening, and kayaking. He was also fond of traveling to Sicily, Venezuela, and Florida to visit his sisters and the rest of his family. His homemade pasta parties with his kids and family friends were legendary. He was very proud of his Sicilian heritage and passing down family traditions became one of the highlights of his life. He was a devoted father and Nonno and loved all his goombahs like family.
Anthony is survived by his two sons, Steven Militello of Glouceter, Matteo Militello of Gloucester; one daughter Caterina and her husband, Leonardo of Gloucester; three sisters, Kristine Ferrara and her husband Vito, of Trappeto, Sicily, Maria Militello De Russo and her husband, Giuseppe of Acarigua, Venezuela, Geri Ferrara and her husband, Francesco Paolo of Trappeto, Sicily; three grandchildren, Dylan Militello, Beau Militello, and Francesco DiMercurio.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by one sister, Vincie DeRose.
His funeral Mass will be held on Monday, February 17 at 11am at Holy Family Church, 60 Prospect Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
