Antonio "Tony" John Ripepi, a beloved father, accomplished surgeon, and passionate outdoorsman, passed away on December 6, 2023, at the age of 60. Tony was the cherished oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. Philip and Josephine (nee Macri) Ripepi.
Born on February 24, 1963 in Pittsburgh, Tony's life was marked by remarkable achievements and an unwavering love for his family and the pursuits he held dear.
Tony's journey began in Bethel Park, where he excelled in football and wrestling during his high school years. His dedication and talent paved the way for a successful academic and athletic career at John Carroll University. A true sports enthusiast, Tony not only proved his mettle on the field, but also showcased his prowess as a hot dog eating champion and a 4 year rugby player and team captain.
Tony pursued a career in medicine, attending Jefferson Medical College and training in General Surgery at Case Western University. Tony excelled as Chief Resident and re-organized the trauma helicopter flight program in Cleveland. Tony was then chosen by the Cleveland Clinic as a fellow, and subsequently returned to Pittsburgh as the first fellowship trained laparoscopic surgeon in the city. His commitment to his profession was reflected not only in his surgical expertise but also in the compassion and care he extended to his patients. He was proud to practice surgery with his father for 15 years and enjoyed a tremendous 25-year career serving patients at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh and St. Clair Hospital.
Beyond the operating room, Tony found tremendous joy in two things: his four amazing children and the great outdoors. Above all, Tony's greatest pride came from being a devoted father to Lillie Grace, Natalie Jo, Antonio Philip, and John Ronald. Tony's love and pride in his children was evident in every aspect of his life.
A fly fisherman of notable repute, he left his mark on the angling world by inventing the "Washington Red Ant" fly. His love for hunting knew no bounds, and he shared unforgettable adventures with his father, brothers, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends in the vast landscapes of Africa, Canada, and all over the United States.
Tony's diverse interests also extended to the rink, where he was an avid hockey fan, supporting and cheering for his children as they pursued their own passions on the ice. As a lifelong Pittsburgh sports fan, he absolutely loved enjoying Pens and Pirates games with them.
Tony was not only a loving father but also a cherished brother to Drs. Laurie and Mark Sangimino, Dr. Vince and Jodi, Beth and Rob Quinn, and Phil and Dr. Sarah. Their bond added immeasurable richness to Tony's life. Tony was also the amazing uncle to Julie, Joey (Emilie), Missa (Christian), Meg, Victoria, Vincie, Andrew, Mark, Eric, Robby, Phil, Sam, Nick (Jenni), Claudia, Sophia, and Luke. He was in frequent attendance at all of their activities.
As we remember Antonio Ripepi, we celebrate a life well-lived-a life marked by dedication to family, excellence in his profession, and a zest for adventure. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and indomitable spirit.

I had the wonderful pleasure of working with him at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland. He was so compassionate and a great human being. I am shocked to hear of his passing. Truly a great man and surgeon.

First memory of Tony was at St Clair office. He and staff were wonderful. Tony assessed Roy's abdomen after he had had several surgeries due to an auto accident. Tony said "I can do something about that" And he did. A 7 hour surgery. He was loved by the hospital staff. I'm a retired RN from St Clair. His patients were so appreciative. I know we are. Thanks Tony for your caring and skill.

Deepest condolences to Tony´s family. May they find comfort from the love Tony left behind.
I worked with Tony at Mercy Hospital and at SWSC. I saw his work and had full trust in his decisions. I worked with two Drs. Tony at Mercy, so Dr Tony Ripepi was addressed by me as "My Dr Tony". After I retired , I trusted him for his counsel on my medical crisis. I felt I could count on his counsel as I aged.
I am heartbroken that such a vibrant, wonderful person died so young. I will miss him. And I couldn´t come to the funeral due to recovering from a car crash few days before.

Dr. Ripepi operated on me twice over the past 13 years. Both times solving my problem. It was during this time I felt he was like a real friend who cared and enjoyed watching me getting on with my life. I am twenty years his senior but he made it feel like we were pals sharing the same life challenges as Pittsburgh guys.
I will miss him and I extend my personal love and respect to his family. Patrick Angelo kealey......

We met when he started at St Clair and since my hometown is Monongahela we had an immediate connection. We remained friends ever since. He was always there to help.

I just want to say that I will miss him so very much, Tony was a bright spot in my day when I worked for Starbucks on Valleybrook road, when my friend Ida told me the news I was heartbroken. I will never forget him. He was kind and funny and always spoke kind words always. Such a loss to me, the community and especially his family. Much love and prayers to all of you. I know God welcomed him into his kingdom , with a "well done!" I will miss him terribly.
Thinking of all of you!

My friend Tony. I was very intimidated to work with you doing Laproscopic surgery as I had absolutuly no idea of how that worked. When you came back to Pittsburgh and showed me how to do ithis surgery I looked forward to work with you every Tuesday and Thursday at SWASC. You taught me so much and I looked forward to help you do your surgery to help your patients. I love you and will miss you. Karen

I loved Tony as I do all of the beautiful Ripepi family. So many great memories of him in my childhood and early adulthood. His generosity and fierce loyalty to family and friends was a lesson to me. He is gone way too soon. What an amazing individual. We were all blessed to have had him in our lives.

He will be remembered for his wit as well as his compassion and grace both on the stream and in the medical office.

Tony was one of the most generous and thoughtful humans, and we are all blessed that he was a part of our lives. Tony and I became fast and great friends, spending many hours on flats fishing boats, discussing the wonders of the saltwater, our families, careers, and sports, telling tall tales and jokes and all around opinions of world matters, of which Tony had no shortage! His time with us was too short, yet we can be grateful for the incredible impact he had on all of us, and carry his memory with us on our journeys. My most sincere condolences and prayers for comfort for all of Tony's family.

I really enjoyed seeing him at work . We joked , he was a doctor I seen for my gallbladder issues. What I´ll always remember is how I talked about world history all while going under anesthesia. Then I alarmed everyone on the table , when I shot up to talk about the sinking of the lusitania .... Haha . God bless you, Rest easy Doc!

Dr. Ripepi was an amazing surgeon. My husband Ryan worked at St. Clair Hopsital and would have conversations with him often. He was the only surgeon we trusted to do an operation for my husband in 2023. If it wasn't for Dr. Ripepi he wouldn't have changed my husband life for the better. He was a thoughtful and funny doctor who will be missed.

Tony will be missed by many including his "extended family" in Cleveland. I know I speak for the entire Coletta family when I say our lives were enhanced and more joy filled by the countless times he spent with us. His roaring laugh, incredible and often unbelievable stories, his inclusiveness, and his ability to make everybody laugh.

He taught many of us how to drive stick in his Tacoma. He took us to fireworks at The Point, to John Carroll to see what college was all about, the shooting range, guided us through the game room at his parents house giving us the stories of every animal, and so many other "adventures."

He held a tremendous respect for our family which was firmly rooted in the lessons he learned from his family. He taught us how important family was. He gave me a key to his apartment when he lived in Cleveland. I had an open invitation. He told me to call whenever and no matter how busy he was he always answered my calls.

We will all miss Tony. What a beautiful legacy he has left with each us. We are all sharing in your loss. I love all of you guys. I´m truly heart broken.
