Archer David Huott

Archer D. Huott, MD of Palm Desert, California passed away on October 9, 2012 after a short illness. He was 82 years old. He was preceded in passing in 1990 by his wife, Rita Lorraine Schneider originally of Rib Lake, Wisconsin, and also by his only sibling in 1989, his sister, Catherine Doris Finn. Dr. Huott was born in Nyack, New York and spent his childhood in Haverstraw, New York, where he graduated from Haverstraw High School. He obtained his premedical degree from Seton Hall University in 1953 and later graduated from Marquette University Medical School (now The Medical College of Wisconsin) in 1958, earning his MD degree. He completed a Rotating Internship at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in Portland, Oregon in 1959. He then served as a Captain in the US Army Reserve at the US Main Recruiting Station and at the US Army Dispensary at Fort Slocum, both in New York City, from 1959-1962. He then received a commission in the US Army. He completed a Neurology Residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. in 1965, and transferred to Tacoma, Washington where he served as Chief of the Neurology Service at Madigan Army Medical Center from 1965-1968. He then went on to complete a Neurophysiology Fellowship (EEG and EMG) at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA in 1969. After that, he joined the staff at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1969, serving initially as Chief of the Electrodiagnostic Laboratory. During his tenure at Walter Reed, he taught medical students, residents and fellows, first as Assistant Professor of Neurology at George Washington University Medical School in Washington, DC, and then as Professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He and his family lived in Silver Spring, Maryland at that time where wife Rita and he spent the bulk of their child rearing duties. He eventually achieved the rank of Colonel in the US Army, and Chief of the Neurology Service at Walter Reed Medical Center, retiring from active duty in 1980 after a twenty-one year career in the US Army. He then entered private Neurology practice in California, initially in Palm Springs in 1980, and then he moved with wife Rita and daughter Kristen to Visalia, California in 1982, eventually retiring from the practice of medicine in 2000. He finally moved to Palm Desert for a well deserved retirement, where he resided until his passing. He is survived by his seven children, six sons, William, Steven, Christopher, David, Michael and Patrick, two of whom are also physicians, and his daughter Kristen Marie St. Amant. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, many stepchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He is well loved by his immediate and extended family, and also his many patients, the latter whom he felt very privileged to serve over his long Neurology career, providing expert care and instruction. He also enjoyed various hobbies, such as stamp collecting and gardening, and visiting with his numerous grandchildren. A committal service with graveside Military Honors will take place at St. Peter's Cemetery in Haverstraw, New York at 1:00 pm on Friday, August, 12, 2022.
