Art Levon Stevens,84, passed away at his home in St. Augustine, Florida.
Art and his two sisters were given away as children and he was raised by the Cubbege family of St. Augustine. As a very young teenager, Art traveled to Louisiana during the summers to work the shrimp boats. Once old enough, he joined the Florida Army National Guard and enjoyed many years of service with fond memories of driving army tanks. In 1959, he married Grace Carr and they had two daughters. Art and Grace later divorced in 1978 but remained caring friends. He had other loves in his life and his most recent relationship was with Joyce Vikes of St. Augustine.
Art was an avid bow hunter and outdoorsman and won many State and local archery competitions. He was President of Ancient City Archery Club and was so well known for his archery skills, that his services as an archery teacher were in high demand. Even in his later years, Art would search for the perfect tree branch in the woods, then carve and polish it into a beautiful functioning bow, making his own arrows as well.
At age 62, Art retired from a long-time heating/air occupation. If you asked him how he was doing, he always said "living the good life." Art had a wonderful sense of humor and brought laughter and smiles to those around him right up until his passing. He will be dearly missed by his family.
Art is survived by his two daughters; Sheryl Billitz-Pappy (spouse Larry Pappy) of St. Augustine and Kathy Harris (spouse Trip) of Palm Coast, his sister; Estelle Smith of Tampa, and grandchildren; Scott McElroy (spouse Jaime), Lauren Billitz (fiancé Dallas Pappy), Gracie Harris, as well as great grandchildren; Lexeigh Billitz, Isabella McElroy, and Kollins Billitz-Pappy. Art's sister Louise Andreu and grandchild Nicole Harris predeceased him.
Art wished to be cremated and his ashes will be spread in a private family gathering near his beloved cypress swamp, where he fed his deer each day. Donations in his memory can be made to Community Hospice (www.communityhospice.com). They provided compassionate care to Art and his family that will always be remembered and appreciated.

Another River Road original has passed. Hats off to Effie and George Cubbedge for not hesitating to add two more children to their clan.
Junior and Louise were always family.

Art was one of the first friends we made in FL. His life lessons and stories were the best part of our visits. My last visit with Art, he shared with me a hummingbird nest and told me the story of the mother and babies. Now up until that time I had 2 feeders out and never saw a hummingbird, on the day Art passed, a hummingbird showed up at my feeder and has come every day since. I believe it's Art's way of showing me he's still around. He will be sorely missed by both Ernie and I. He touched our hearts.
