A bright light that shone on Earth is now beaming down from heaven. Cheryl Ann (Croyle) McCray, 66, passed peacefully at Community Hospice – Bailey Center for Caring, St. Augustine, FL. She was born May 31, 1959, in McKeesport, PA, the daughter of Eugene R. and Ruth F. Croyle. She graduated from Parkersburg Catholic High School (WV)(Class of '77), received her bachelors at Marshall University and her juris doctorate at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She was a disc jockey in the 1970s and 1980s using the moniker Cheryl Mason as she worked her way through school. After graduating from Duquesne, she became an assistant prosecutor for Wood County (WV) and Washington County (OH). She also had private practices in those counties until she was appointed (Wood County) Family Law Master. She then moved to Bruceton Mills, WV and opened a private practice. She relocated to St. Augustine, FL more than 20 years ago where she was an assistant St. Johns County district attorney, before going into private practice.
She was an ardent sports fan, always cheering on Duquesne basketball, Marshall and UF football, baseball and basketball, and of course the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
She was involved in the local St. Jude’s Children's Research fundraisers as well as many other local organizations and causes. She was an avid runner and enjoyed her days at the beach.
She had a deep faith in Christ and was active in the music ministry at LivingStone church in St. Augustine. She was a Catholic by faith and played guitar and sang during the Saturday 4pm Mass at San Sebastian Catholic Church, St. Augustine.
In addition to her parents who also live in St. Augustine, she will be deeply missed by her fiancé, Danny Stephens of St. Augustine; sister, Karen "Kacie" Brannon of St. Augustine; brother, Steven Croyle of Bingham Farms, MI; nephews, Cody Brannon of Cocoa, FL and Ryan Brannon (Angela) of St. Augustine; niece, Bianca Croyle of Jacksonville; and the light of her life, her grandniece, Aloura Brannon of St. Augustine. Cheryl was preceded in death by her son, Zachary Colin Lee McCray in 2016. In addition, she is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Community Hospice Bailey Center for their wonderful care of Cheryl, as well as thank her cousin, Linda Holloway and Cheryl's son's girlfriend, Alexx Collard, for their care in her last month as well.
A Celebration of Life will be held by LivingStone Church on Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 10AM at Anastasia 16 Church, 110 Circle Dr E, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Visitation will be at Craig Funeral Home, Thursday, October 9, 2025, 1-4PM and 6-8PM.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Noon at San Sebastian Catholic Church, 1112 FL-16, St. Augustine, FL 32084 leading to graveside services at Craig Memorial Park, 2600 Old Moultrie Rd, St. Augustine, FL 32086.
