Arthur Paul Sherman entered peacefully to eternal rest on June 16, 2025. He was 81 years old. Born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 21, 1944, to the late William Sherman and late Mary Sherman, both of Pittsburgh. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Kathleen Thorpe Sherman of Norfolk, and brother William Sherman of Pittsburgh. Arthur "Art" is survived by him and Kathleen's four beautiful children: Michael (Josie), Nicholas (April), Anthony (Jenny), all of Norfolk, and Kristen (Allen) of VA Beach, one Granddaughter, Katherine, of Kenansville, NC, Sister, Margaret Lubawy of Pittsburgh, PA, and many Nieces and Nephews.
Art faithfully served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He retired from small business construction ownership, and production maintenance with Smithfield Foods. He was known for his dedication and hard work in these fields. After retiring, Art enjoyed traveling with his wife, Kathleen. They often took trips with family to Gettysburg, PA and Corolla, NC. Their favorite trip was a cruise to Mexico where they explored ancient grounds.
Art had a deep love for American history, specifically the American Revolution and Civil War. He read numerous books on the subjects over the course of his lifetime. He knew intricate details about soldiers and battles and random trivia. He often enjoyed discussing these topics and traveling to battle grounds. His other favorites in life included salted peanuts in the shell, black licorice, The Old West magazine, Tin Can Sailors newspaper publication, comedy bloopers, singing along to the 50's Gold oldies station, jigsaw puzzles, walking, meeting new friends, old war movies, and visiting his fellow members of the Tidewater American Legion.
Art cherished his family & friends. He always looked forward to gatherings, calls, and visits with distant relatives. In earlier years, Art and his family took annual summer trips to Pittsburgh where they would visit with his family and proudly tour the town where he grew up. These fond memories he instilled in his children for them to continue to cherish.
Art dedicated his life as a husband and father. He sacrificed for his family and did so with immense pride and love. Art's heart was enormous, and it showed in all his acts of kindness. He often volunteered his time doing favors for friends and family, never expecting anything in return. Art was the husband, father, and friend you could count on to be by your side through the best of times and the worst of times.
Art was adored by many and will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him. A celebration honoring Art's life will be held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 2-6pm at The American Legion Post #327, 705 Lesner Ave., Norfolk, VA 23518.
