Steve Miller, 73, of Norfolk, VA passed away from cancer on the morning of September 24, 2025 at Norfolk General Hospital. A celebration of life service will take place at 11 AM in the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd (7400 Hampton Blvd. Norfolk, VA 23505) on Wednesday October 8, which would have been his 74th birthday. The service will be followed by a reception from 12:30-2 PM at Norfolk Yacht and Country Club (7001 Hampton Blvd, Norfolk VA 23505), just across the street from the church.
Steve was born in Richmond, VA on October 8, 1951 to William and Dorothy Miller. He lived a fascinating life full of adventures, including travels in Germany with his family while his father served in the air force. After graduating high school in 1969 Steve entered a Catholic seminary with the intention of becoming a priest. He decided that celibacy was not for him, however, and instead went to Old Dominion University for both his Bachelor's degree in Education and a Master's in audio-visual technology. After his child was born he moved to Austin, Texas with his then-wife Mary McDonald, where he enjoyed camping on the lake and long motorcycle rides through the hill country. Later in life he moved back to Virginia to be closer to his many wonderful friends as well as his brother Bill.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents William and Dorothy Miller as well as his sister, Ellen Michelfelder. He is survived by his child Austin Hill, their wife Becca Hill, his brother Bill Miller, and his niece Micah Miller. He is also survived by numerous friends who love him dearly.
Steve was known for his humor and his love of people, and he told countless stories of his adventures over the years. He loved skiing, scuba diving, sky diving, motorcycle riding, and many other unique activities. As a young man Steve acted in several plays, TV series, and even starred in an indie slasher movie. He was proud to have been part of the movement for peace during the Vietnam war, and he cared deeply about liberty and justice for all. In his last words he spoke of how much fun he'd had in life, and he told us that he goes with peace.
Steve was a great lover of music, and you could often hear him cranking up the volume on the Beatles, the Grateful Dead, David Byrne, and more. If you know a song he loved that you feel should be included in the playlist for his celebration of life, please share it on the memorial website or email it to [email protected]. Please share any photos you may have to the same places, or upload them here: https://drive.google.com/driv.
If you would like to attend the celebration of life on October 8th, please RSVP by Friday, October 3 to allow us to give the venues an accurate headcount and be placed on Norfolk Yacht's guest list for the reception.
