August A. Spitzer, 96, of Aberdeen, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Bethesda Home. His funeral service will be Monday, August 8, 2022, 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church, 1002 Moulton St., Leola, SD, with Pastor Judy Schultz officiating. Burial will take place at Green Mound Cemetery in Leola, with Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home in Aberdeen in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be Sunday, August 7, 4-7 pm at the mortuary, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 pm. Visitation continues one hour before the service at the church on Monday.
August A. Spitzer was born November 12,1925 to Fred and Katherina (Heyd) Spitzer at Long Lake, SD. He attended school at the Long Lake country school, and worked on his parents' farm until he entered the United States Army on October 26, 1950, serving in Korea as a Mess Sergeant until his honorable discharge on September 26, 1952.
After returning to Long Lake, SD, he married Idella Hauck on November 29, 1953. The couple lived and helped on his parents' farm until he accepted a job with the railroad and moved his family to Spring Lake Park, MN.
In 1993, August and Idella retired to Leola, SD, and enjoyed years of traveling and camping, and spending time with family. The couple shared 43 years of marriage until Idella passed away on August 7, 1997.
Grateful for having shared his life are August's children Allen (Jan) Spitzer, Audrey (Lori) Spitzer, Charlotte (Ken) Grandell, Cheryl (Brent) Palmer, Janene Whitters, Keith (Renee) Spitzer, Dwight (Dawn) Spitzer, and Melodie (Robert) O'Brien, 20 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, sister Wilma (Ray) Schnabel, and many nieces and nephews. August was preceded in death by his wife Idella, sons Daniel and Joseph, parents Fred and Katherina, brothers Harold, Henry, Reinhold, Alvin, Ervin, sisters Ida & Edna, second wife Wilma, and grandson Kenneth Mayhew Grandell III.
