It is with profound sadness that we note the sudden passing of Barbara on Sunday, October 29th. She was born in 1952 to Jean and Seth Amols and grew up in Syosset, New York. She graduated from Bates College where she met Courtland, and they married in 1976. Barbara subsequently earned a Master's degree in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont. After graduate school, they moved to Baltimore where they lived and worked for six years, and welcomed children Matthew and Elisabeth.
Moving to West Hartford in 1985, Barbara worked as a Historic Preservation consultant for several years while a full-time mother. Benjamin was born in 1990. Barbara was an active member of the community – involving herself in PTO and many other West Hartford organizations. As a second career, she received her secondary education degree from St. Joseph's University and began teaching social studies at East Catholic where she flourished as a teacher for eleven years. Since retirement in 2019, she and Courtland have enjoyed traveling widely, especially when visiting their children and grandchildren in Colorado, Wyoming and Boston. She is remembered for her passion for learning, love of history, willing laughter, and above all, devotion to her community, friends, and family.
Barbara is survived by her husband Courtland, their children Matt (Vanessa), Livy (Matthew C.), and Benjamin (Deirdre), as well as granddaughters Corinne and Harriet. She is also survived by her brothers, John and George Amols.
A Service of Celebration and Remembrance will be held at the First Church of Christ, Congregational, 12 S. Main St., West Hartford on Saturday, November 4th at 2:00pm. Arrangements are through Molloy Funeral Home; there will be no formal calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made to LEVO International, an organization committed to improving food security in inner city Hartford and beyond. https://levointernational.org
