Barbara Whipple Bitter, 79, died suddenly on Friday, February 9, 2007 in Ft. Myers, FL. A memorial service will be held graveside at Woodlawn Cemetery in Perry at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2007. Following the service, there will be a Life Celebration Reception at New Perry Hotel from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Watson-Hunt Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bitter, born in Decatur, GA, was the daughter of the late Wendell and Carolyn Whipple. She was a professor at Georgia Southern University for many years, and upon her retirement moved to Hilton Head Island, SC. She received an undergraduate degree in English from Chapel Hill and a Master’s degree from the University of Tennessee, where she had also begun work on her doctorate degree.

Survivors include her children, Carolyn Silk (John) and Nancy Bitter, both of Decatur, GA; brothers, Wendell Whipple (Betty) of Perry, Earl Whipple of Connecticut, Bill Whipple (Elizabeth) of Atlanta, and Kenneth Whipple (Louise) of Stanton, VA; sisters-in-law, Marge Whipple of Asheville, NC and Mel Whipple of Richmond, VA.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
