Barbara Burrell Cox, age 90, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 14, 2022, following a prolonged battle with dementia.
Barbara was born February 20, 1932, the youngest of three daughters to the late W. Grady and Ophie Reece Burrell. Born in Canton, GA, she grew up in the City of Holly Springs and was a 1949 graduate of Canton High School. In 1951 she earned her college degree from Reinhardt College.
Barbara married her sweetheart, Weyman, on April 10, 1954, and had two sons, Jim and Tom. Together they built a life of entrepreneurship and ministry around their passions of helping people, gospel singing, and fox hunting. In her forties, she led the effort to add Realty to Weyman's already successful Insurance business to form the J. Weyman Cox Insurance & Realty Agency. They were consistently a part of the gospel singing community throughout Georgia and the southeast. Throughout their marriage, they traveled the country to participate, show and judge foxhound shows and field trials.
Extremely talented, she enjoyed giving away her pieces of embroidery. Later in life, she became fascinated with genealogy. Over the last 20 years of her life, without a computer, adding to prior works, she self-published a 300+ page book of the genealogy of the Holbrook family.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Small in stature but powerful in sacrificial caring and encouragement! It was rare to see her without a smile. She consistently baked the best pound cake ever. It's a fact.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband J. Weyman Cox(d.2000), and sister Zelma Burrell McWhirter (d.2021). Barbara is survived by her son Jim & daughter-in-law Lydia Cox of Cumming, GA, and their children Rex Cox of Cumming, GA, and Anna Cox Mauldin(husband Austin) of Cumming, GA. Her son Tom and daughter-in-law Connie Cox of Woodstock, GA, and their children, Garrison Tyler Cox, currently of Prague, Czech Republic, and Taryn Cox, currently of Orlando, FL; her great-granddaughters Gracie and Ruthie Mauldin of Cumming, GA. Sister Juanita Burrell of Holly Springs, GA, and Sister-in-law Reba Cox Chamblee of Sandy Springs, GA, as well as many nieces & nephews, great nieces & nephews, and beloved cousins.
