Barbara Jean Curry, a cherished matriarch and beloved caregiver, gracefully departed this world on October 10, 2025, at the age of 80, surrounded by her loving family. Born on June 30, 1945, in Roanoke, Virginia, Barbara was a vibrant spirit whose life was dedicated to nurturing others. For nearly three decades, she served selflessly as an STNA caregiver at Pinnacle Point nursing home, pouring her heart into every interaction and bringing comfort to those in her care.
With a personality as big as her heart, Barbara was a constant source of love, kindness, and laughter. Her generosity knew no bounds, and her outgoing nature endeared her to all who crossed her path. Whether she was sharing a joke or uplifting those around her with her unwavering faith, Barbara’s essence was one of warmth and joy.
Barbara found immense happiness in cooking for her family during holidays and gatherings, each dish a labor of love that brought everyone together. Her culinary creations were not merely food; they were celebrations of family, filled with the flavors of laughter and shared memories. She relished moments spent with her children and grandchildren, her heart swelling with pride for the legacy of love she had built.
Her interests extended beyond the kitchen; she found delight in the thrill of the casino and the soothing melodies of gospel music. A devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church in Dayton, she expressed her faith through her actions, embodying the principles of compassion and community.
Barbara leaves behind a sprawling family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her children, Orma (Mike) Houston, Marion (Jaquata) Sample, Phyllis (Lamar Sr.) Robinson, Jill Sample, and Sheila Sample. Her legacy continues with her numerous grandchildren —Emmanuel Marshall Jr., Marmar (Jeena), Mario (Dahnae), Jazz, Ja'Michael, Kirsten, Calvin, Keewon, Shakeisha, Ashlee, Author, Marques, Antwon, Marionna, Lonnie, Davante Jr., Quintony, Marion Jr., Montel, Bruce Jr., Tyree, Reginae, PJ, Markeish, CC, Anitra — and the countless giggles and hugs shared with her 37 great-grandchildren.
Barbara’s bond with her extended family was equally profound, as she treasured her nephews Ronnie (Mary), Johnnie, Tamar (Sam), David, Glenwood, David, Joshua, Darren, Jeremiah, Trashon; her nieces Marell, Moe, Elise, Katrina, LaTonya, Nicole, as well her godchildren Tony, Tameka, Samuel, Rolanda (Bobby) and Michael Hoskins. She held a deep friendship with Adrian Woods and cherished the 50-year companionship of her best friend, Lillie Hoskins, as well as dear friends Melvin Roundtree, Sheila, Melva Morgan, Robin, Genie, Tina, Monica Campbell and Keisha Jackson. A special cousin Karl Cosby. Sister-in-law Cheryl Huston. Nephew Lonzell Huston III, Raymond. Nieces Shameka and Sheila Elam.
Though she is preceded in death by her loving parents, Lonzell and Ardivee Houston Sr., her husband Reedie J. Curry, nephew, Eric Houston and several siblings — Norine Hayward, Minnie Houston, Myra Houston, JoAnn Houston, and Lonzell Houston — Barbara's spirit endures through each life she touched. Her grandson, Kevin Dandy Jr., also precedes her, leaving a profound mark in the hearts of those who remain.
Barbara lived a life rich in love, laughter, and family bonds that transcend time. As we say goodbye, let us remember her vibrant spirit and the countless ways she illuminated our lives. She is deeply missed, forever cherished, and will eternally hold a special place in our hearts.
