Barbara Engler Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D Oliver Funeral Apartments, Inc. - Laskin Road Chapel on Mar. 4, 2026.
On the morning of February 19th, 2026 from her home at Marion Manor in Virginia Beach, Barbara Engler went home to the lord. She was blessed to have a long, adventurous life. Barbara is predeceased by her parents Gertrude and Michael Sculley, two husbands David Dowd and Frank Engler, her youngest daughter Patricia Engler and her siblings James Sculley, Jane McPartland and John Sculley.

Barbara was born in Oswego, New York on April 4th, 1930. She was the third of four children (Jane, Jim and John). Barbara grew up in Oswego, New York and graduated from Oswego High School in1948. She then went on to college at SUNY Geneseo, where she graduated with a degree in Library Science. She went on to get a master's in education and found her niche in high school English. Barbara taught high schoolers in Copiague, New York. She was a teacher who was always involved with her students, helping them to become the best people they could be.

Barbara married David Dowd in 1956, in Oswego, New York. Barbara and David settled on Long Island and had three children (Cynthia, Julia, and Patricia). David passed away in 1971. Barbara quickly acclimated to raising her three girls while working full time.

In 1975 Barbara remarried Frank Engler. He passed away two years later and again Barbara resiliently focused on raising her family.

In 1991 Barbara retired from her long teaching career and followed in her sister, Jane's, footsteps and relocated to Virginia Beach. Barbara had a group of high school friends who she stayed in close contact with throughout her life. When she moved to Virginia Beach Barbara became involved with her church, Church of the Holy Family, and joined the SOLO's group. The group had weekly dinners and even took a cruise to Alaska. Barbara also became a docent for the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk Virginia. Barbara and Jane did a lot of traveling around the United States and the world. They were quite the duo!

Barbara will best be remembered for her quick wit, wonderful laugh and beautiful smile.

She leaves behind her children Cynthia (Mark) Girard and Julia Dowd and grandchildren Mackenzie Girard, Kaitlyn (Roger Smith) Girard, Madeline, Gemma and Charlotte Dowd. Along with sisters -in-law Sally Dowd, Lee Sculley and many nieces and nephews, all of whom meant a great deal to her.

Arrangements were made by H.D. Oliver. Funeral services will be held at 11AM on March 13th 2026 at the Church of the Holy Family. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to Marion Manor Assisted Living facility.
