It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barbara S. Hess, a beloved mother, proud grandmother, and a friend to all. She passed peacefully, surrounded by her adoring family on June 19, 2025, at the age of 90.

She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer (husband Fred), Paula (husband Jeff), Alicia (husband Larry), her grandchildren, Alexandra (husband Ryan), Bennet, Grace (husband John), Kennamon, Claudia, Frederick (fiancé Bryce), Celia, Brian, and Olivia, as well as her great-grandson John. She is lovingly reunited in eternal peace with her husband Bennet, son Brian, and daughter Pamela - loved beyond words, missed beyond measure.

Barbara was born on February 19, 1935, in Rockville Centre, New York, to Ralph and Mary Stearns. She graduated from Adelphi University and later married Bennet J. Hess, M.D. on May 3, 1958. Their permanent residence was in Rockville Center, New York, where they raised and nurtured five beautiful children. The couple spent 50 years sharing countless summer memories and laughs with family and friends at their home in Laurel. Barbara supported her husband throughout his dedication as Chief of Staff at Mercy Hospital, where the couple's passion for life and service touched many. Barbara's children remember her as an inspiring and nurturing mother who not only encouraged them to follow their dreams but also walked beside them with unwavering support, wisdom, and love. Her gentle guidance and belief in their potential shaped the people they are today.

Barbara was a self-taught pianist with the rare gift of playing by ear. Known for her quick wit and effortless humor, Barbara had a remarkable gift for bringing joy to those around her. Her radiant smile could light up any room and lift even the heaviest of hearts. As a devoted parishioner of St. Agnes Cathedral, Barbara volunteered faithfully at the Rockville Centre Nursing Home, where she shared the Eucharist and brought warmth and encouragement to the residents. Her unwavering strength and deep faith carried her through life's many challenges and hardships. Barbara lived with grace, courage, and resilience, touching countless lives with her joyful spirit and kind heart. Here's to 90 years of love and laughter.

A funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25, at 10:45 a.m. at St. Agnes Cathedral. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Barbara's life. We invite you to plant flowers as a tribute to Barbara, letting their colors be a reminder of the divine beauty she reflected in the world.
