Barbara J. Hussey, a resident of Melrose and formerly of Somerville, passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at age 87.

Barbara was born on December 8, 1937 in Hartford, CT. She grew up in Holyoke and graduated from Holyoke High School before earning her nursing degree from Youville Nursing School in Cambridge.

A natural caregiver, Barbara dedicated her career to helping others as a compassionate and skilled Licensed Practical Nurse. She began her nursing career in Labor and Delivery at Somerville Hospital, where she worked for more than 20 years. She later served as a Charge Nurse at Salter Healthcare in Winchester and went on to become the Wellness Nurse at The Gables in Winchester, retiring after a lifetime of service to her patients and colleagues.

While working at Somerville Hospital, she fell in love with a Hospital orderly named Michael J. Hussey, and they were married in Somerville in 1959. They raised their family of three children in Medford.

Barbara had a lifelong love for Maine, especially the beaches and lighthouses along the Southern Maine Coast. She loved visiting Nubble Light, taking her family camping, and could never resist stopping at a yard sale along the way. Barbara expressed her love of family through her home cooking, sharing her homemade specialties like pierogis and apple pies with all.

Grounded in her faith, Barbara was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner of St. Patrick's Church in Stoneham. Blessed with a sharp wit and a quick sense of humor, she had a way of making those around her laugh and feel at ease. Above all, Barbara was deeply devoted to her family and shared a special bond with her grandchildren.

Barbara will be remembered for her kindness, strength, and spirited personality. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Barbara was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Hussey. Devoted mother of Michael D. Hussey of Berlin, NH, Mark C. Hussey and his wife Deborah of Peabody, and the late Suzanne C. Hussey-Germany. Former mother-in-law of MaryEllen Hussey. Dear sister of Ronnie McNeil of OH and the late Carol Proulx, and John McNeil. Loving grandmother of Maryanne Messina, Audrey Hussey, and Amanda Germany.

Family and friends are invited to gather in Barbara's memory during Visiting Hours at Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 8:15-9:15am, before leaving in procession to St. Patrick's Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham for her Funeral Mass at 10am.
