Barbara Jean Perry was born on January 23, 1955, in Indianapolis, Indiana to John and Lerlie Ruth Perry. She peacefully celebrated her transition into eternal rest on Saturday, November 15, 2025. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charles L. Johnson Sr.; her parents, John and Lerlie Ruth Perry; her sister, Mary Louise Parchman; and her brother, Kevin Perry.
Barbara accepted Christ at an early age at Church of the Living God Temple 18 in Indianapolis. In 2016, she became a member of Unity in Christ Family Worship Center under the leadership of Pastor Rodney Cork, where her love for God continued to flourish.
She proudly graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1973. Known affectionately as “BJ” by her friends, Barbara was admired for her talent, intelligence, and the gentle strength she carried throughout her life. Momma had a beautiful gift for sewing, and her intelligence shined in everything she touched.
On July 5, 1975, Barbara married the love of her life, Charles L. Johnson Sr. From this union came three beautiful children:Charles L. Johnson Jr., Jermaine Henry L. Johnson, and Tanisha J. Jackson.
Barbara had the most radiant smile and the kindest heart. She meant what she said and said what she meant. She began her career at Shell Oil Company before devoting over 35 years of service to DFAS, where she was respected and loved by her colleagues. Even while raising her family and working full-time, she put herself through college, ultimately earning her Master’s degree from Indiana Wesleyan University—a true testament to her determination and brilliance.
Barbara never told a single soul “no.” She loved her family with everything in her, especially her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed drinking her Pepsi & smoking her Misty Light 120’s, watching The Young & The Restless, traveling in her later years, and spending precious moments with her loved ones. Above all, Barbara loved the Lord. It showed in how she lived, how she spoke, and how she loved others.
Barbara leaves to cherish her memory:Her sons, Charles L. Johnson Jr. and Jermaine Henry L. Johnson (Nicole); Her one and only daughter, Tanisha J. Jackson (Bryant);Five sisters, Shiann Smith, Jacqueline Journey, GyJuan Williams, Debbie Jo Perry, and Theresa Perry (Israel); Her amazing grandchildren: Talicia, Charli, Jayla, Jermaine Jr., Cheyann, Donte, Josiah, Davin, Mariyah, Jersi, Skylar, Matteah, Matthew Jr., Brynn, Bryana & Dasia; great grandkids, Ariyah Johnson and Niomi Collins; Sister-in-laws, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who loved her deeply.
