Barbara Kane Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
Barbara M. Kane, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on September 24 at the age of 79.
Born in Wilmington on December 23, 1945, to Fred and Rose Phillips, Barbara was a proud graduate of Christ Our King School and Ursuline Academy, Class of 1963. After spending cherished years at home with her daughter, Theresa, she pursued her passion for caregiving, earning her LPN certification from Delaware Technical Community College in 1977. Barbara went on to serve patients with skill and compassion throughout her career at the Medical Center of Delaware, Christiana Hospital, Manor Care, and in the office of Dr. Anna Marie Sullivan.
Family was the heart of Barbara's life. At the beloved Benge Road home she shared with her husband before moving to Newark in 2005, she hosted countless Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter gatherings, along with many joyful summer weekends by the pool. Her warmth and devotion created memories that will be treasured for generations.
Barbara was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Dick, who passed away in 2017. She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Engel; grandchildren Andrew (Alexandra) Engel, Caitlin Szymanski (Stanley), and Matthew Engel; and her three great-grandchildren, Elliott, Cole, and Olivia Engel. She is also remembered by the extended family she became part of through her marriage to Dick, including stepdaughter Kathy Smith and several additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Barbara is additionally survived by her sister, Rosemary Tyre (Stanley), and her family.
Burial will be held privately.
