Barbara Gene Hackwell Pestana (78), our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, slipped away peacefully in her sleep on August 3, 2025. She was born January 31, 1947, in Salt Lake City, UT, to Vernon and Mildred Hackwell. Barbara met her life-long sweetheart, John R. Pestana, at Zissi's Drive-In in 1967, and they were married on July 19, 1969. John and Barbara enjoyed 34 years together prior to John’s passing. Shortly after John’s passing, Barbara met her next life partner, Holly, her puppy. Barbara and Holly were inseparable! They spent 19 years together. They were truly best friends. (We even have the JC Penney photo shoot pics to prove it.)
Barbara spent her working years in the school cafeteria (making cookies, brownies, desserts, and all other “premium” lunchroom fare). She had a sweet tooth that fueled her sweet heart. The teachers/staff and students at each of her schools loved her dearly.
Barbara was a woman of sass and spunk. She loved to tease those whom she cared for most. Her sweet smile and her petite size were the perfect guise for her mischief. Unfortunately, we cannot give you a complete list of her shenanigans, but please know that she was not as innocent as she appeared.
She will be sorely missed in the hearts of many and has left an empty space at her passing. She leaves behind her children Lisa (Russell) Wynn, Jeff (Marie) Pestana, and Michael (Melissa) Pestana; grandchildren Madisyn (Isiah), Lauren, and Chandler. Alyssa (Ryan), Ashton, Cole, and Connor; great-grandchildren Bohdi and Ryker; sister Sue Davis; brother Vern Hackwell; and many others from her Sagewood at Daybreak Memory Care family. Barbara is preceded in death by her loving husband John R. Pestana, her parents Vernon and Mildred Hackwell, her brother David Hackwell, and her precious pup Holly. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Lake Hills Memorial Mortuary, 10055 South State St., Sandy, where friends may call on Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and Thursday from 12:00 until 1:45 p.m. before the service. Interment to follow the services at Lake Hills Memorial Cemetery.
