Dr. Barbara (Stuehrk) Schare was born on October 6, 1937 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to the late Helen (Dempsey) and Louis Stuehrk. She died with her family present on August 26, 2023. She was a force of nature as evidenced by her many accomplishments. Above all, she loved her family.
Barbara graduated from Our Lady of Angels in 1955 and went on to graduate from The Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Hamilton, Ohio. She later received her BS in Nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1962 followed by a MS in 1968, while having three children under the age of 5. In 1982, Dr. Schare was awarded a Doctorate of Education, soon afterwards she was awarded a PhD in nursing from the Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Cincinnati.
After a career in the nursing field, Barbara went on to become a full professor at the University of Cincinnati's School of Nursing, focusing on pulmonary medicine. During her 32 year career at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Schare taught both undergraduate and graduate students. Upon her retirement in 2000, Dr. Schare was awarded the distinction of Professor Emerita. Her published research papers are still referenced today.
While at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Schare served as the president of the AAUP (American Association of University Professors), and was the first woman to negotiate a faculty contract at UC. She was the faculty representative to the board of trustees and served on the faculty senate. Barbara also served on the AAUP national council where she was given the Dillwyn F. Radcliffe Award in 1992 for her distinguished service in the cause of academic freedom.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Louis Stuehrk and her beloved daughter, Jenny Schare. She is survived by her husband and soul mate of 63 years, Dr. Charles Schare, her son Jeff (Lynn) Schare, daughter Lisa (Eric) Schare Johnson, her granddaughters Helen Jacobs and Grace Schare, and her step-grandchildren Luke, Abigail and Natalie Cimpello.
Bestowed with a brilliant mind and a quick wit, Barbara promoted lively and passionate discussions in her home. Her entertaining skills were epic and she made everyone feel at home and welcomed.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to the Saint Ursula Academy Scholarship fund in loving memory of the late Jenny Schare, or the Cincinnati Free Store Food Bank.
