"The strongest argument in favor of the gospel is a loving and lovable Christian." E G White
Barbara Shackelford referred to this quote from The Ministry of Healing on more than one occasion while making comments on Sabbath School lessons or during some other relevant discussion. As she said those words I would always think to myself, "and YOU are the epitome of such a person!"
I met Barbara when I started regularly visiting the Jeffersonville SDA Church in 2011. She was warm, friendly, and welcoming from the very beginning. Her genuine Christian demeanor and the warmth displayed by the other members was infectious and it wasn´t long before I knew this was to become my new church home. I thought very highly of Barbara and I feel privileged to have known her as a sister in Christ, working for the upbuilding of the kingdom. We worked together on the Church Board, Sabbath School, Women´s Ministries, and everywhere else we were needed.
She was talented in so many areas and willing to freely share her gifts with her church family. She was an excellent cook, a perfect hostess, and she had an appreciation for beautiful things. She would make the loveliest arrangements, sometimes with seasonal flowers from her yard, that would be such a blessing to the congregation. And then those flowers would make it to the basement to further beautify the serving tables during potluck dinners. Our fellowship dinners were extraordinary, in part, because of her attention to details. She and Howard were so amazing and dependable - just a blessing! Barbara was so kind she would always compliment me on whatever dish I had brought to the dinner, no matter how it may have tasted.
When Barbara invited the church members to her home she would go all out! Her hostess skills were on full display. For several years she would host a Fall cookout/costume party that included a hayride in the country singing hymns and youth campfire songs. As usual, the food was delicious and the warm memories will always have a place in my heart.
Toward the end of 2023, Barbara and I had a chance to bond even closer when we were both diagnosed with cancer. I remember us holding hands and communicating with our eyes about the journey we were experiencing together. We were able to share our honest feelings and cling to the promises of the Lord. We both looked forward to when the battle would be ended and we could be at rest. Earlier in the year, when it was announced that the doctors said she was "cancer free," I was so very happy for her. I looked forward to the time when I would also hear those words. . . So it really took me by surprise when I heard she had passed away. . .
Barbara is at rest. I used to think that I wanted to be like her "when I grow up." But she had an several years´ head start on me so there was no catching up. Of course, I do realize that Barbara was one of a kind, God´s precious jewel, and I want to thank the Lord for bringing her into our lives.
I offer my sincere condolences to Howard and the entire family during this time of bereavement. Thank God it won´t be long before we will see her lovely face again rejoicing in the earth made new. What a Blessed Hope!!
