Barbara Shirley, a cherished educator, devoted family member, and active community servant, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, at the age of 78 in Berea, Kentucky.
Barbara was born December 26, 1946 in Jackson County, Kentucky to Leonard and Esther Marie Malicote. She grew up alongside her brothers, Larry and Phillip Malicote. Though preceded in death by her parents and her brother Larry, Barbara's legacy continues through her beloved family.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Douglas Shirley, who was her steadfast companion in life's journey. She is survived by her daughter Carri (Steve Johnson) VanZant-Lowery, her step-daughter Karen Shirley and her husband Ken Pierce, and her brother Phillip Malicote and his wife Michelle. Barbara's joy was multiplied by her niece Sara Johns, her nephew Matthew Malicote and his wife Kelsey, and the many extended family members who will miss her dearly.
Barbara's passion for education led her to graduate from Berea High School in 1965. She furthered her commitment to learning by obtaining a degree in teacher education from Eastern Kentucky University, followed by a Masters degree and Rank One in education. She dedicated 28 years to teaching fourth and fifth grades in the Berea Independent School system, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. Barbara was a long-standing member of Berea Baptist Church and the Pearl Sunday school class. She served her church community as a Deacon, contributed to various committees, and uplifted many with her voice leading the early morning service singing for several years.
Barbara's commitment to her community extended beyond the classroom and church. She was a valued board member and officer of The Berea Health Ministry, playing a crucial role in sustaining the ministry's efforts.
In her final year, Barbara received exceptional care from the professional staff at the Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, for which her family is profoundly grateful.
Funeral service will be 12 pm, Saturday, January 4, 2025, at Berea Baptist Church with Pastor Kevin Slemp officiating. Burial will follow in the Berea Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm at the church. Condolences may be left for the family at www.lakesfuneralhome.com

Barbara and I graduated high school together. She was one of the sweetest people I ever met and she always had a smile on her face. My prayers for her family through this very difficult time
