RIFTON - Barbara V. Small, 96, of Maple Street, died Wednesday January 1, 2025, at Golden Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingston. She was born in Bronx NY on April 5, 1928 a daughter of late John and Nettie (Dummermuth) Schachinger. Barbara attended and graduated Hastings High School. After graduation, she worked for a local store until marrying Walter Small of Brooklyn NY on June 29,1947. She moved to California to be with Walter until his discharge from the US Navy in 1948. Returning home to Hastings on Hudson, where she and Walter built their home on property on Brandt Street. Barbara was a homemaker and raised 3 sons until moving to Rifton in 1984 after Walter retired from Tuckahoe Police Department. Barbara and Walter enjoyed wintering in Port Richie, FL. Walter passed away on July 6, 2013, after which the residence in Florida was sold and Barbara spent the balance of life residing solely in Rifton.
She is survived by her brother John Schachinger Jr., two sons Walter Small Jr. of Cary NC, Alan Small and his wife Claudia of Rifton, daughter-in-law Georganne Small of Hopewell Junction, 6 grandchildren Walter III, Cheri of NC, Travis and Heather of Hopewell Junction, Joseph and Ryan of Rifton. Great- Grandchildren Walter IV, Mason of NC, Jacob of Rifton, multiple nieces and nephews.
Barbara was predeceased by her son Gary Small in 2001, and her sister Nettie 2013.
Her funeral service will be held 11 AM Wednesday January 8, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 470 Hurley Ave., Hurley, NY. Rev. Stan Webster will officiate. Entombment will follow privately.
Visitation for family and friends will be Tuesday January 7, from 4 PM to 7 PM at George J. Moylan Funeral Inc., 2053 Route 32, Rosendale. (www.GJMoylanFuneralHome.com)
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to Rifton Fire Dept., PO Box 155, Rifton, NY.
