Barbara Gwendolyn Wise, a beacon of love and wisdom, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026, in
Lakeland, Florida. Born on April 1, 1949, in
Mauston, Wisconsin, Barbara's life was a tapestry woven with the joys of teaching, the warmth of family, and the beauty of the natural world.
Barbara's early years in Moston were filled with the laughter and camaraderie of a large and loving family. She was the cherished sibling of Tom (and his wife Francine) Hovde, Gail Williamson, Roger Hovde, Mark Hovde, Cindy Hubbard, and Karen (married to Roy) Zimmerman. Her life was further enriched by the presence of many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will remember her fondly and miss her deeply. Barbara's heart held a special place for her late husband, Kenneth Wise, who predeceased her, as did her sister, Shelly Lastinger, and her parents, Sydney and Gwendolyn Hovde.
Barbara was a lifelong advocate for children and followed her passion by earning a Bachelor's degree in Child Care and Development. As an education counselor, she was deeply committed to supporting the growth and well-being of every child she worked with. She believed in taking "time to enjoy life," and she brought that same patience and care into everything she did.
Barbara loved life's simple pleasures and had a special gift for making ordinary moments feel meaningful. She truly lived by the idea to "live life simply" and to "count your blessings." Whether she was decorating for the holidays or adding to her collection of unique treasures, she found joy in the little things. Her cabin in North Carolina was her happy place - a peaceful retreat where she enjoyed nature, quiet moments, and time with the people she loved.
Those who knew Barbara remember her as patient, kind, and always willing to listen or help. She lived the words "love is patient, love is kind" every day. One of the thoughts she carried close to her heart was, "may I be safe, may I be well, may I be at peace," a reflection of the gentle, thoughtful way she lived and the calm she shared with others.
