As a child growing up, Barry loved playing sports. In 1964, he participated in the Little League World Series. Barry graduated from B.C Rain High School in Mobile, Alabama, where he lettered all four years in three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. He received a baseball scholarship to Faulkner Junior College. He transferred to Troy State University, where he continued as a standout baseball player. After college, he began his coaching, bus driving, and teaching career at Fairhope High School in 1974-1975, teaching for 38 years. He also coached his two boys in Fairhope city baseball. After retirement, he began working part-time at Bass Pro Shop, the ultimate man cave.
Barry became a grandfather in 2007, which has been one of his ultimate joys in life. As each grandchild came, his love for them grew even deeper. Barry loved to cook, and everyone enjoyed his cooking. He has served faithfully as a deacon at Barnwell Baptist Church for many years. He loved his Savior and spread the joy of the Lord to all he came in contact with. He always encouraged others to smile and have a blessed day.
Barry is proceeded in death by; his parents, Addison and Billie Nix; his brother, Terry Nix; and grandson, Harrison Michael Pace.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Donna Dees Nix; two sons, Joshua Dee Nix (Heather) and Thomas Kyle Nix; his five grandchildren, whom he loved dearly, Addison Michelle Nix, Ava Elyse Nix, Whitten Dee Nix, Camden Ray Nix, and Madelyn Marie Nix; nephew, Kristopher Nix; and his beloved blue heeler, Roscoe.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 3PM, at Barnwell Baptist Church,7780 U.S. Hwy 98 in Fairhope, AL. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation before the service beginning at 1PM. Officiating will be pastors Jerry Caylor, Bob Tucker and Buddy Hanson. Interment will follow at Brook-Cedron Cemetery.
