Barry L. Schaffer, of Hulmeville, passed away on Thursday, January 5th. He was 82 years old. Barry was born in Lansdale, PA to the late Doris (Schaffer) and Lawrence Monte on August 17, 1940. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Joanne M. Schaffer. Barry attended Bristol High School and graduated with the class of 1958. He married his high school sweetheart and he and Joanne became parents to Denise, Barry, and Jenni. Barry and Joanne grew up together and had a special kind of love, they were truly soulmates.
Barry earned a business degree from Rider College and spent most of his career with Amtrak. He was charismatic, gentle, and wise. You could always count on his incredible nature, kindness, wisdom, and soothing words in any situation. He was an incredible husband, father, Poppi, and friend. He was positive and supportive, and always operated so gracefully. Barry enjoyed and devoted himself to his career at Amtrak, always finding a way to balance family and home life too. He really enjoyed his home, all types of yard work and home projects. He loved to decorate and landscape. His dogs played a big role in his happiness. Barry was a young grandfather and was always hands on. In the last two years he was able to live in Harrisburg and enjoy his adult grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Barry was also very religious. Both he and Joanne were very active in the Catholic Church and acted as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Barry is survived by his two daughters, Denise M. Roberts (the late Al) and Jennifer L. Rosenblum Gottesman (Jeff). He is preceded in death by his son, Barry M. Schaffer. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Matthew Roberts (Anna Michelle), Mark Roberts (Amanda), John Roberts (Brianna), Laura Roberts Burkholder, Barry Joseph Schaffer, Joshua Rosenblum, Hannah Rosenblum, Jacob Rosenblum, Noah Rosenblum, Simon Rosenblum, and Elijah Rosenblum. Barry was also a great-grandfather to Luke Roberts, Grace Roberts, Aurora Burkholder, Amelia Roberts, and Alice Burkholder. He leaves behind two siblings, Lawrence Monte (Karen), and Kim Konski (Kevin), as well as many nieces and a nephew. He is preceded in death by his brother Paul Monte (Suzanne).
Family and friends are invited to Barry's Life Celebration on Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at Queen of the Universe Church, 2443 Trenton Road, Levittown, PA 19056. Barry and I worked in the Contact Center together. I directly worked for him during a project to train ticket office staff. He was a hands on training supervisor who could solve any problem that arose during the year long training project. I always enjoyed working with Barry, never a dull moment and lots of laughs along the way. To be around Barry was an association that I always will treasure. He was very down to earth and very wise for his years. It was an honor to have known him. My condolences to his family.
