Becky Ann McRae was born on July 19, 1931 in Lyon Township, Section 36, 16, 4E, on the McRae family farm, just South of Herington, Kansas. Becky was the oldest child of Thomas McRae, Jr. and Vera Erma (Von Rohr) McRae. Her grandparents were Thomas McRae and Theodoshia (Cory) McRae, and John R. Von Rohr and Elizabeth (Born) Von Rohr. She was preceeded in death by her parents, grandparents, as well as her younger sister, Elizabeth Jo McRae.
Becky began attending Victory School District 114 in September of 1936 at 5 years of age. She also attend Prairie Star School, Lincolnville, and Diamond Springs Schools. Becky attended Herington High School, graduating in 1948. After high school, she attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, Kansas, graduating in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Becky began her teaching career at the Eisenhower School in Great Bend, Kansas and taught there for 4 years before pulling up stakes and moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she taught for 2 years. In 1957, Becky took a teaching position in Overland Park, KS, District 110 where she taught 2nd grade and Art. Becky then returned to Herington, where she taught 2nd grade for 27 years. In addition, Becky returned to Emporia State Teachers College where she completed a Master's Degree in Education. She retired from teaching in 1990 after a total of 41 years in education. There is no official count of the number of students Miss McRae touched during those many years, but she was known to be firm as well as innovative. She truly left no child behind.
Becky also worked diligently on the McRae Farm. Sister Jo worked for many years in the Kansas City area and came home most weekends, to lend a hand. 1n 1998, Becky and Jo hosted "100 Years on the Farm". Nearly all of the remaining decedents of Thomas and Theodohsia McRae attended this epic reunion. Also in 1998, Becky and Jo purchased additional farmland, enhancing the size of the McRae property.
Becky cherished her family. She was always interested in how each of us were and what we were doing (especially in school!). She cared for everyone and her door was open to all.
Becky continued the work that her mother began in preserving the McRae family heritage. She worked for many years collecting information from anywhere she could and eventually compiled it in a large book with text and pictures that spanned 150 pages. She even made copies available for anyone who wanted one.
Becky loved to travel and told many stories of long road trips. Becky and Jo traveled across the highways and byways of the United States and Canada. They loved visiting NATIONAL PARKS. At times they overheated, ran out or nearly ran out of gas, and blew-out many tires. None of this deterred them and truly had some of the best times of their lives.
Becky crafted as well. She was incredibly talented. She was also an avid reader, and puzzler, and exceptional bingo player. Her strong character, clever mind, and desire to forge ahead got her through many adversities in her life. She was, to the best of her physical ability, in charge of her life until shortly after her 94th birthday.
Becky will be long remembered.
