Benjamin Milton Anderson, 78, known affectionately as Ben to his friends and family, left the world as peacefully as he lived, at his beloved home on the family farm near
Sullivan, Missouri, on August 27, 2024. Born in Sullivan on November 30, 1945 to his parents, Benjamin A. and Mary E. (Steen) Anderson, Ben's roots ran deep in the community that he cherished throughout his years.
Ben's early years were spent attending the country school at Oklahoma School in rural Sullivan, where the foundation of his strong work ethic and love for learning were built. He later graduated from St. Clair High School in 1963, carrying with him the values and knowledge that would guide his future endeavors. Ben dedicated most of his working years to the craft of carpentry, a skill that earned him respect and recognition within the Carpenters Union. His commitment to excellence saw him rise to the position of Construction Superintendent with Local 1839, a role from which he eventually retired, leaving behind a legacy of fine craftsmanship and leadership.
Family was the cornerstone of Ben's life. He was a blessed father to seven children: Jan, Shelly, Christina, Will, Mary Beth, Neil, and Elizabeth, each of whom inherited their father's tenacity and compassionate spirit. Ben's heart expanded further when he married Martha Jean "Jeannie" Crow on July 25, 1998, warmly welcoming her children, Tony and Justine, into the fold. Together, they nurtured a family that was grounded in love, mutual respect, and the joy of shared experiences.
The Anderson Farm was not just Ben's residence but his personal sanctuary. It was here that he lived most of his life, basking in the peaceful surroundings and the quiet life that the countryside offered. Ben's passion for classic cars was more than a hobby; it was a way of connecting with history and engineering marvels. His collection was a source of great joy and pride, each vehicle with its own story and significance.
Music was another of Ben's great loves, with classic rock tunes often echoing through the halls of his home. The unmistakable riffs of ZZ Top were a particular favorite, providing a soundtrack to many of the family's gatherings and his solitary moments in the workshop or garden. Gardening and canning were not just pastimes for Ben; they were a testament to his dedication to the land and the satisfaction of reaping the fruits of one's labor.
Ben's gentle soul found companionship in his fur babies, Millie, Sam, and TC, who were never far from his side. They were his loyal companions, sharing in the quiet rhythm of farm life and offering unconditional love. His affinity for nature extended beyond his pets; he was often found watching the wildlife that frequented the farm, taking pleasure in the simple beauty of the natural world.
