Benjamin William Bohuslav, affectionately known as Ben to his friends and family, passed away peacefully of natural causes on March 26, 2025, in Schulenburg, Texas. Born on February 7, 1936, in Komensky, Texas, Ben lived a full and vibrant life that touched many with his loving, faith-filled, and passionate spirit.
Ben's early life was rooted in the values of hard work and education. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1958, a testament to his dedication and intellect. Ben's career was marked by distinguished service in the Air Force for two years in Lubbock, Texas, before he embarked on his professional journey as a Civil Engineer. His contributions to the City of San Antonio and his work with the Texas Highway Department in the Yoakum District and as the District Engineer of the San Angelo District from 1986-88 were significant. Ben retired as District Engineer from the Yoakum District in 1992, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and excellence. Among his many accolades, he was particularly proud of receiving the Gib Gilchrist Award for his innovation of the creation of School Safety Lights. In addition, Ben was a founder of the Czech Heritage Museum in LaGrange.
The hallmark of Ben's life was his love for music and his community. He found joy in singing Czech songs and playing Czech music on his accordion. His passion for dancing and his melodious voice were staples in the church choir, where he sang with devotion. Ben's creative spirit was not just evident in his music but also in his ability to design and build at least 11 homes throughout his life, showcasing his talent and precision.
Family was the cornerstone of Ben's life. He was a loving husband, first to Eunice Machart, whom he married on January 27, 1957, and who preceded him in death, and later to Melba (Lou) Johnson, whom he married on February 11, 1984, and who is also deceased. Ben was a guiding light to his children, Wanda Bohuslav Hermansen, who predeceased him, Steve Bohuslav, and Sarah Bohuslav Heidaker, as well as to his son-in-law Paul Heidaker and daughter-in-law Connie Bohuslav. His role as a grandfather to Curtis and wife, Sarah and Blake and wife, Nicole Bohuslav, Cole and wife, Lindsay Heidaker and Cade Heidaker, and as a great-grandfather to Kinley, Brooks, Taylor, and Tate Bohuslav reflected the depth of his love and the joy he took in his family's growth. Ben also cherished his stepchildren, Sarah, Lane, and Hollis Smith, and their families, including grandchildren Carly Brown, Hannah Ford, and Emma Robinson, and great-grandchildren Ben, Liam Brown, Andrew Ford, Margaret, and Catherine Blumentritt.
Ben is survived by his sibling Frank Bohuslav, and preceded in death by Ermin Bohuslav, Marcella Hanslik, Johnnie Bohuslav and Ivan Bohuslav.
Ben's life was a testament to these words: "Happiness is not a destination, but a mode of travel." His ability to touch hearts was evident in every aspect of his life, from his professional achievements to his personal passions and the warmth he extended to all those he met.
As we remember Benjamin William Bohuslav, we celebrate the legacy of a man whose life was a tapestry of love, service, and unwavering faith. He has left an indelible mark on the hearts of his family, friends, and the many lives he touched. Ben's memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories, music, and homes he created all reflections of his enduring spirit.
Benjamin William Bohuslav's life was a journey of joy, commitment, and love-a journey that has now found its peaceful conclusion. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
