Bennie Johnson Jr. was born on August 28, 1932, in Warrenton, NC, to the late Bennie Johnson Sr. and Flora Mamie Johnson.
Everyone who knew Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Benny, and Mr. Johnson knew him as a hard-working man. His first job was on his parents' farm when he was a little fella. He had four sisters; one passed away when she was a child. He was the only son.
At the age of 18, he joined the military. He stayed in for two years. He was a soldier in the Korean War. When he discharged from the Army, he lived with his favorite aunt, Aunt Sade, in Va. He got a job at the shipyard for a short period, then moved to NJ There he worked as a security guard for many years alongside his main job as a machinist supervisor at Teterboro Barrel Company. After 34 years, he medically retired in his fifties.
He was a good cook; everyone loved his BBQ sauce, and he was an excellent dishwasher! He LOVED washing dishes. He took pride in everything he did to the very end. He met his love of his life, Georgia Annette Shackelford, when she was 21. He was 27. He said she was pretty and smart with long hair. All the guys liked her, but she chose him! They were married for 53 years until she went home with the Lord. Bennie was a snazzy dresser. He'd wear all colors, but his favorites were light green, all blues, and bright yellow. He enjoyed music, night fishing, and cars. His first car was a Mercury. It was his dream car. He had sweet memories of church and being baptized in the creek on his dad's land by Reverend Jones. He had a big smile talking about how Reverend Jones could preach and sing so well that all the people would shout. Bennie Johnson Jr. was a VERY patient man with a strong Godly character. He was quiet and wise. It seemed like NOTHING ruffled his feathers. He loved telling the stories of his life if you'd loan him your ear.
On Saturday, August 2, 2025, early in the morning, Bennie went home to glory and departed this life.
He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, Georgia Johnson; two children, Brian Johnson and June Mattiex; four sisters, Beatrice Davis, Sade Hargrove, Dorothy Bolton, and Caroline Johnson.
Bennie leaves precious memories to his memories son Jerrel Johnson Sr. Daughter-in-law Cassandra Johnson, son Jeffrey Mattiex. Two sisters-in-law, Hattie Mae Howell and Delores Shackelford. Eleven grandchildren, Terrilyn James, Lamal & Jamal Mattiex, Latoya & Michael Lambert, Jerrel Jr. & Tippi Johnson, Tiffany Chase, Marcus & Kapri DeShields, Richard DeShields, and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
