Ben (Bennie) Sarrett passed away on August 6, 2023, surrounded by a loving family. Bennie was born October 28, 1937 in Pampa, Texas. He was the only child of Bennie Eli and Jewel Biggs Sarrett. Bennie spent his early childhood in Illinois where he developed a lifelong passion for the St. Louis Cardinals before returning to Texas in the second grade.
Bennie graduated from Kenedy High School and Law School at the University of Texas in Austin. He was sworn in as an Attorney-at-Law in September, 1968. Bennie was board certified in both Criminal and Administrative Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and practiced both. He tried cases in many courtrooms across and appeared before multiple state agencies before settling into a position as an Administrative Law Judge for the State Comptroller in the later part of his career. Bennie was eager about politics and worked several stints in the legislature as well as political campaigns. (Bennie was a voracious reader. He didn't write the book on law and policy, but there's a strong chance he owned the book and read it many times.)
Bennie is survived by his avowed soulmate and wife, Nancy LaMance, his daughter, Joanna Sarrett, and his bonus daughter, Gina Grisby. He is also survived by two bonus grandsons whom he loved deeply, Drew and Scott Weatherby, and his precious friend and dog, Stormy Rose. A special thanks goes to his great-nephew-in-law, James Merriman, and his fiance, Tessa Roberts, for their care and devotion to Bennie in his final weeks.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
