Craig Phelps Obituary

Born May 14, 1966, in Cheverly, Prince George's County, Maryland, to Alvin Milton Phelps and Shirley Lee Randall Phelps. Died August 6, 2025, in his family home in Austin, Texas, after doing all he could to battle an aggressive cancer. Craig was always going above and beyond for his family, making them feel loved and protected through all of life's journeys. This love was shared with his friends, extended family, and anyone who he felt needed someone in their corner. His service was a guiding light and a boon for many whom he took under his wing and loved like they were his own. We are sure this charitable part of his spirit will shine as he blesses the lives of those he will meet now that his earthly mission is complete. Throughout his childhood, many gravitated to him because of his goodness, sense of humor, and thoughtful insights. The influence of Craig's siblings, family friends, and parents led him to become the spiritual leader and teacher that he has been throughout his life. While in college, he drove from Utah to Connecticut to spend summers with his younger siblings. His influence helped them through some rough times. He made sure they had a strong support system for learning the gospel and many important life lessons. Craig attended Rick's College (now BYU-Idaho) for a year before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ecuador Guayaquil Mission, where he had the opportunity to serve and teach the Ecuadorian people about his Savior, Jesus Christ. He attended Brigham Young University and graduated with a dual major in English and Psychology in December 1992, and proceeded to get an MBA at BYU that propelled him into a successful career in technology. While attending BYU, Craig met Marné Ridd. As we say, "sparks flew in Sparks II", referencing the apartment complex where they met. They fell in love and were then sealed to each other in the Salt Lake Temple on August 9, 1991. With his constant service to the Lord and those around him, he spent much of his time working in various capacities, but his favorite calling was being a father. He also loved serving as a Young Men's leader, and as a Primary and a Seminary teacher. His ability to love and connect with children and youth was unmatched and brought light into his life. With many years of supporting each other through laughter and tears, Craig and Marné have shared and enjoyed many blessings, including their five children and their spouses, also called "The Phelps 10". Craig was an amazing father. He always put the needs of his children first, and he and Marné gave them a childhood filled with memorable moments, including roadtrips, karaoke, birthday parties, bedtime serenades, and lots of joking and laughter. He was preceded in death by his father, Alvin M. Phelps; brother, R. Todd Phelps Sr.; and father-in-law, Gordon L. Ridd. He is survived by his wife, Marné R. Phelps; his children: Sarah Phelps; Dallin C. Phelps and Stephanie Cox; Emily Phelps; Nichole and Marc O. Hansen; and Spencer G. and Alyssa Phelps; his mother, Shirley L. Phelps; and his brothers and sisters: Cindy Phelps (wife of the late R. Todd Phelps Sr.); Dean and Melanie Phelps; Ryan and Chantelle Phelps; Mindy and Craig Varkevisser; Jolie and David Smith; Roger and Laura Ridd; Holly and Preston Winn; Marin and Rus Rasmussen; and Katie and Nate Proctor; and his mother-in-law, Susan Ridd. Craig has been blessed with many nieces and nephews whom he loves. The Phelps family has been blessed with wonderful friends throughout their lives who have lightened their load and created meaningful moments that they cherish. Craig was blessed with excellent medical care teams at Texas Oncology and MD Anderson Cancer Center, who supported him and his family until the end. We thank each of you for your influence in our lives. Texas funeral services will be held at the Round Rock Stake Center, 8140 Racine Trail, Austin, TX, 78717, on Wednesday, August 13th at 2pm. Utah funeral services will be held on Friday, August 22, at the Orem Canyon View Stake Center, 575 East 800 North, Orem, Utah 84097, with visitation at 10am, followed by the funeral service at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Center at MDAnderson.org/Gifts.
