Bernabe Ochoa Solis was born 01/29/1929 in El Llano Michoacan, Mexico during the Cristero War. His parents were Maria Ochoa and Jesus Solis.
His siblings: Jesus, Juan, Jose, Estanislao, Antonio, Virginia, Rosa and Maria
He was the last to pass of his generation.
Five months after his birth the Cristero conflict ended. Three months after the Cristero conflict ended the Great Depression began and occurred during 1929 – 1939. In addition to the economic crisis and poverty his father passed away during this time leaving his mother a widow to care for 9 children.
In 1939 at the end of the Great Depression, World War II began. At the end of World War II in 1945, he was 16 years old.
Bernabe learned to survive amongst war and poverty at a very young age. He began to work at the age of 4. His school was the real world. Although he never completed any formal education, he learned by educating himself.
While he was not working he enjoyed fishing in the river and playing baseball. He spoke of his travels on foot crossing many states in Mexico playing baseball with his team.
In the late 1940's he arrived in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. He lived there for many years and worked at a Bank and played, coached and managed professional baseball.
In 1959 he married the love of his life, Irene Aguilar. In 1961 he emigrated to the United States with his wife and resided in Los Angeles. Their First Born child was born a son, David Bernabe then second and first daughter, Laura Elena.
In 1963 they left Los Angeles and arrived in
Antioch, CA. Bernabe was employed by Tillie Lewis Food Co, Hickmont Cannery as a Forklift Driver in Antioch. Many times he held two sometimes three jobs at a time. Including working in the fields as a farmworker in Brentwood and surrounding areas.
In 1968 a third child was born in Antioch, a daughter, Patricia then later a second son Albert Jesus and then last, a third daughter, Veronica Maria.
He belonged to Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Antioch where he and his wife served as Eucharistic Ministers from mid 1980's thru late 2000's Approximately 25 years serving the Spanish Mass Community.
He retired in 1993 and during this time he spent much time with his family especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing on the Antioch Pier, Gardening and participated in the community garden, he enjoyed playing poker with friends at the Senior Center.
In 2014, he became disabled and required mobility assistance with a wheelchair.
He survived the Covid Pandemic
In August 2024 he became hospitalized and entered into eternal rest on September 4th, 2024.
Bernabe was a very loving kind man who disciplined his children with acts of love. He was very hard working man, very brave, strong, respectful, intelligent, authentic, 100% organic and devoted Catholic. He prayed daily and was devoted to the Holy family always ending in prayer with "Jesus Mary and Joseph be with us and favor us"
He is the last of his generation to pass. He leaves behind five children, David (Ana Solis), Laura (Jerry Hardt), Patricia (Sergio Viveros), Albert, Veronica (Greg Holler), thirteen Grandchildren and eleven Great Grandchildren.
