Bernard "Bernie" Murray, a lifelong resident of
Elwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 31, 2025. Bernie was born in
Elwood, Indiana, on January 5, 1934, to Chester and Agnes Murray Sr. He was a proud 1952 graduate of Frankton High School. After briefly attending Purdue University, Bernie worked for his brother Bud and at Steel Slitting before courageously joining the United States Navy in 1956. His service took him to many exciting locations, including Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, and Hawaii. In 1958, Albert and his beloved wife, Barbara Grace Cain, whom he married on March 3, 1957, returned to Elwood. He then embarked on a distinguished 37-year career as a tool maker at Delco Remy, a division of General Motors, before retiring in 1997.
Bernie was a man who cherished community involvement and was a member of East Main Street Christian Church, U.A.W. Local 662 and the Quincy Lodge #230 in Elwood. His interests included traveling and meeting new people, a passion he shared with Barb as they journeyed around the country together. Above all, Bernie was a devoted family man. He took immense joy in spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and his great-great-grandson. His family was his pride and joy, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication.
Bernie is survived by his children David (Patricia) Murray and Jeff (Jerri) Murray; his grandchildren Rolland (Elizabeth) Patton, Jr., Josh Murray, Michael (Erin) Murray, Tessa Murray, Nathan Murray, Brenna Murray, Meghann (Robinson) Jones, and Ben (Rachel) Mohr; his great-grandchildren Bryce Reed, Rebecca Patton, Madison Patton, Coraline Jones, Blakely Jones, Kaiden Murray, and Kinslee Murray; his great-great-grandson Jackie Mort; and his nephew Rod (Angie) Murray. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Linda (Tom) Montgomery, his nieces Mary Ann Remington and Madonna Hahn and nephew Tony Hahn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Agnes Murray; his wife, Barbara Murray; his siblings Chester (Ethel) Murray Jr., infant Mary, Loretta (Ralph) Hahn, and Madonna (Robert) Remington; his grandchildren Bethany and Ryan Murray; and his nephews Buddy Murray, Robert Remington Jr., Kent Remington, and Bobby Remington III.
The viewing for Bernie Murray will take place on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 11:00 am at Dunnichay Funeral Home, located at 1113 South Anderson Street,
Elwood, Indiana, 46036. The funeral service will follow at the same location at 1:00 pm starting with a Masonic memorial service, and Rev. Roger Gardner will officiate. Burial will follow at Elwood Cemetery where the United States Navy and Elwood V.F.W. will provide military honors.
