Whitney & Murphy Funeral HomeBertha Martinez Mazón, of Chandler, AZ, passed away on September 1, 2025, at the age of 100. She was preceded in death by husband Frank, son Frankie, parents Fermín and Frances, brothers Rudy and Salvador Martinez, and sisters Mary Helen Tovar and Jessie Montaño. Bertha was born on April 5, 1925, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. She grew up in the Grant Park neighborhood, attended Grant School, Lowell School and graduated from Phoenix Union High School in 1943. After High School, Bertha went on to work for the State of Arizona Department of Economic Security. She served as an Employment Office Manager where she helped countless Arizonans obtain employment. She later served as a Legislative Liaison for the department and retired with approximately 45 years of service. Bertha’s guiding mission was to serve people, which she did through helping those in need to obtain gainful employment and navigate through a complex system to access unemployment benefits, food stamps, veteran claims, and housing assistance. Legislators and constituents alike have credited her over the years with making a significant impact on the lives of individuals, youth and families.
In addition to work, Bertha was an award-winning artist and devoted her adult life to being a member of Las Damas del Valle, the oldest Latina volunteer organization in Arizona for which she was one of the earliest members. Bertha committed her life to spending time with her beautiful family while creating opportunities through education, work and service. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and dear friends.
