Obituary published on Legacy.com by Silverton Memorial Funeral Home - Toms River on Oct. 7, 2025.
Bertrand F. Mutz, known affectionately as Bert or "Jiggy" to his friends and family, was called home to the Lord on the 3rd of October, 2025. Born on the 14th of July, 1930, in Weehawkin, New Jersey, Bert's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with faith, joy, and the love of those around him. He departed from this world peacefully at his home in Brick, NJ, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and devotion.
Bert was pre deceased by his cherished mother Ethel Clarkson Mutz, as well as his beloved brothers Frederick, Robert, and Thomas. His life was further enriched by the love and laughter of his nieces and their children, including Judy Rockey and her husband Jon of State College, PA, along with their children Katie; Becky, her husband Evan and their son Hayden; Corie and her husband Josh; Liz and her husband Eric and their children Strider, Wilder, and Daphne. Niece Carol Vogt and her husband John of Vernon, NJ, along with their children Jay, his wife Kristy and their sons JJ and Frankie; Jessica, her husband Michael and their children Kylie, Michael, and Brielle; and Ashley, her husband Austin and their son Matthew. Bert's loving cousins Jimmy, Patti Lang, and Helen Campbell, as well as their families also held a special place in his heart. He was blessed with the love of many dear, devoted friends. Cookie and Mario Picinich, as well as their late sister Kathryn (Honey) Kellenberger and their families were foremost among those he was fortunate enough to call "Family".
Bert was a 1948 graduate of Weehawkin High school, going on to obtain his BA, AB, AND BS degrees. He retired from a valuable and storied career in kidney research at NYU Medical Center and Montefiore Hospital. He was employed, additionally, by FujiHunt Chemicals.
Bert's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his existence. As a devoted member of Holy Family Church in Union City, NJ, he lived out his beliefs through action. He was a pillar of the church, serving as a member of the Augustinian Recollect Fraternity (SAR), an extraordinary Eucharistic Minister, a lector, and the past Chairman of the finance committee. His passion for his faith was evident to all who knew him. He participated in the annual Passion Play for 14 years and contributed to numerous other church activities.
Bert's interests were as vast as his heart. His feet carried him through many a dance floor, where his spirited nature shone brightly. Music was a language that spoke to his soul, and he reveled in its ability to bring people together. Bert's love for languages extended beyond music, as he was an avid student of many tongues, embracing the beauty found in the diversity of human expression. Traveling was another of Bert's joys, exploring new places and cultures, which only served to deepen his appreciation for the world and its Creator.
Describing Bert as faith-filled, gentle, witty and spirited only begins to capture the essence of a man who lived his life as a testament to the values he held dear. He walked through life with a gentle demeanor that spoke volumes of his inner strength and the depth of his character. His spirit was a beacon of light that inspired others to seek joy in their own lives, to embrace each moment with gratitude, and to live with purpose.
As we celebrate Bert's journey to eternal life, we reflect on the impact of his presence in our lives. He was a man who embodied the love of Christ, who taught us the power of kindness, and who encouraged us to live each day with intention. Bert's story is one of triumph, a life well-lived, a path well-trodden, and a faith well-kept. His memory will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him, and his legacy will be carried forward by those who continue to walk in the light of his example.
Bert has found his final rest in the arms of his Savior, and we take comfort in knowing that his journey has led him to a place of everlasting peace and joy. We hope to honor his memory by living our lives with the same passion and love that he shared so generously with the world. Rest in peace, dear Bert. You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. Now, a crown of righteousness awaits you, as promised by the Lord.
