Betty Heimbach Compton, born March 3, 1930, of Bethlehem, Pa, died peacefully on November 7 at age 95 after a long, well lived life. She was deeply loved by her 4 children and their spouses, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, extended family, and many friends. Her family expresses heartfelt gratitude to her devoted care givers and the hospice team from Family Pillars, who enabled her to remain in her own home as she wished.
Raised in Catasauqua in a large close knit family with her parents, Maude and Harry Heimbach, and 5 siblings, Betty developed an artistic eye and strong communication skills in high school. She married Harry Compton Jr of Bethlehem, and together they raised 4 children, Nita Compton D'Innocenzo, Jane Compton Wendel, Harry Compton 3rd, and William Compton. As a young mother she volunteered in community activities including Girl Scouting, tutoring for the Salvation Army, and a local ballet board. A life long learner, she took college courses and read widely across multiple disciplines including literature, art, psychology, philosophy, history, and politics.
Betty was a passionate social activist and an engaged member of LEPOCO, participating in peace marches and advocating for women's rights. She was a vocal supporter of progressive causes, writing letters to the editor and inspiring others to become politically active.
Most proud of her sharp intellect, Betty used it to enrich and benefit both her own life and the lives of those she touched. In midlife, Betty worked in unemployment services helping her clients navigate the complex system. At age 52, she bravely battled breast cancer seeking the best and most innovative treatment at the time in Boston. Later she successfully pursued her late husband's Veterans Administration claim after 7 years of perseverance going all the way to Washington to win her appeal.
Remembered for her intellect, spirit, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice, Betty leaves behind a legacy of love, learning, and activism. Her strong imprint will remain on all the lives she touched across her lifetime.
A private celebration of Betty's life will be held at a later time.
Brubaker Funeral Home, Inc. of Catasauqua is entrusted with the arrangements.

Grandma it's Tyler I wanted to tell you in prayer that I have not been doing the best but I now am trying to be the best kid you want me to be I always remember you asking me when I was younger "who is the best kid in the world" and I would always reply "me, I am the best kid in the world" after her passing I have been doing a lot of thinking how I could make my grandmother proud of me and I want to pursue being a teacher like how one of her kids became a teacher. I want to also pursue a minor in political science and phycology. I want to thank my family but mostly my grandma for always being there for me she always made me feel special. Thank you so much grandma you will always be in my memories but most importantly you will always be with me and our family.
